        He answered every question on the button; his grade is 100 percent.

button up   =  finish; close
        This memorandum will serve to button up the issue.

check ! =  Right !  Correct !

clear up  =  explain ; solve
        I don't understand this point; would you care to clear it up for me?

come up with the solution  =  find the answer ; solve
        You know the problem; now your job is to come up with the solution.

crack down  =  deal with severely
        He will crack down on us if we don't complete all of the reading assignments.

cross-check  =  verify from different source
        I want you to check with him and to cross-check with everyone else involved.

deadline  =  prevent the use of
  Deadline that vehicle ; the brakes are faulty.

hot water, in   =   in trouble
        If that bridge goes out, we'll be in hot water.
 

I'll buy that.  =  I agree

        Battalion commanders during rehabilitation periods spot check equipment.

stalemate  =  an impass ; a fight with no victory for either side
        After 3 days of fruitless attack, both sides decided it was a stalemate.

stall  =  fail; delay; be delayed
        Your main effort is likely to stall for lack of fire support.

stick around  =  remain in the vicinity
        Tell my aide to stick around till I get back.
