1978
Trans AM Type K

This station wagon had the tailgates hinged on either side of the body instead of in the rear. The rear window-unlike present station wagons-was fixed and mounted vertically above three black glass slots running the full width. When the brakes were applied, or lights turned on, the black stripe would glow red, accomplished by mounting conventional red taillights behind the black-tinted Plexiglas. While the rear window did not open there was full access to the interior from either side. The side windows were released by a console-mounted pull-lever and cable arrangement, with the levers recessed inside the doorjambs so they could not be accidentally unlatched, There was excellent vision to the rear with mirrors right, left, and center. When all the rear seats were folded down, looking back from the driver’s seat gave one the impression that he was in a long all-glass tube, When closed, the gull-wing windows rested against thick soft-rubber gaskets, making tight seals against wind and rain.
