Pontiac Salsa

It's hot. Well, that’s what the designers had in mind with the name, anyway. And with the Salsa's fluorescent orange exterior, who's going to argue? The Pontiac Salsa, which could easily be converted from convertible to panel delivery truck to all-weather hatchback, was the auto industry’s version of the TransFormer toys. Five inter-changeabie roofs were available on the Salsa, as was a drop-gate rear-end panel that provided five feet of load floor length to accommodate surfboards, bikes, etc. (clearly the Salsa designers had the California market in mind), a slide-out cargo drawer all-weather upholstery, and fold-fiat rear seats. Although only 155.6 inches long, the multi-purpose Salsa could handle five passengers—five small passengers. The interior featured water bottles contained inside the door panels with height-adjustable holders, and an AM/FM/CD player housed in a pop-up weather-protected compartment. All controls, except for the gear shift lever and audio switches, were mounted neatly to the steering column. Power for the front-wheel-drive Salsa came from a 1.5-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine.
