This is to be a compilation of reading material that Changeling fans may find
useful. I am putting in both what is refered by the Changeling Player's Guide,
and things that I and others have discovered to be useful though experiance.
If you have a book or movie you wish to be added, please Contact
Me! I ask you include the title, author or director, text on the back of
book or movie cover, and your own review with why it's relevant. Basically,
as much info as you can give me.
So without further ado, let us get to the list.
The Chronicals of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is the first of these five books. Another classic must read. Children enter their closet and find a whole world to explore and adventure in.
Charles deLint - In this case i'm listing the author because almost everything by him is perfect for Changeling. The Newford Anthrologies, Greenmantle, Moonheart, Jack the Giant-Killer... Charles de Lint Homepage Go here. Persuse and learn the glory that are his books.
Neil Gaiman - Another Granddaddy of Changelingesque fantasy. Granted, some of it is graphic novels/comic book format, but do NOT let that stop you. He can tell a story like the best Eshu you know. Sandman, Stardust, Books of Magic, Neverwhere, Good Omens(with Terry Pratchett)... The Dreaming is a great site devoted to Neil. And if you want more info on specific stories by him, do a serch on any of the titles I mentioned before.
Bedlam's Bard and SERRAted Edge series by Mercedes Lackey. I love just about everything written by her, but these ones specifically are more Changeling geared. Elves in LA, Renaissance faires, Pagan Rock bands, all all sorts of fun. Index of Mercedes Lackey stuff @ Firebird Arts has descriptions of all her books and current info.
The Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath by H.P. Lovecraft. Yeah, he's a great horror writter - but this stuff of his is more fantasy, though still a bit spooky in some cases. His stories in this volume take you through his Dreamland releams literally created from dreams and nightmares.
War of the Oaks by Emma Bull. A rock musician down on her luck gets dragged into the madness that is a fairy war! And excellent book that grabs you by the throat and won't let you stop reading. The characters are great.
Brian Froud is actually an artist primarily, but he is an inspiration for almost all Changeling things. World of Froud Would you just go look at his work PLEASE! You'll know what I mean then.
Labyrinth - A teenage girl must traverse the maze of the Goblin King to find her stolen away baby brother. Designed and created by Jim Henson and Brian Froud. Labyrinth site includes character, actor, and crew biographies, text of an early script, photographs and fan art, trivia, and links.
The Dark Crystal - Another visually stunning collaboration between Jim Henson and Brian Froud. Jen, the only survivor of a race fated to end the tryancy of the Skeksis begins his epic journey to fulfill the prophecy, learning much about his world and himself along the way. Fionaurora's Dark Crystal Page Good page to learn more about this movie.
The Never Ending Story - A young boy discovers a book about a magical dying world, and finds out he plays a vital part in saving it. Granted, the many sequals have made this movie concidered a bit corny, but the first is still a wonderful movie.
Legend - In a world that could be our own, magic is vanishing and the forces of good join in hopes to save it. A very beautiful movie to watch with a great soundtrack. Loving Legend Loads of pictures, information, music and lyrics and more.
Hook I love almost anything with Robin Williams in it. In this, he plays a grown up Peter Pan who has forgotten himself and must rediscover is imagination to save his children. This is more a sequal to the Broadway version of Peter Pan or the book than the Disney version. I never liked the Disney one nearly as much as those.
Willow - One of the great sword and sorceries of good vrs evil. Much Celtic mythology in it. The Big Big Willow/Shadow Moon Page Yeah, I know the title sounds lameish - but you can learn just about anything you ever wanted to know about Willow here.
The Secret of Roan Inish - A foreign film about a town on the coast of Ireland where they still believe in the fae and the old ways.
The Princess Bride - This is a beautiful fantasy love story told in the classic fairy tale style. You have your tragic lost love, repressed beautiful maiden, tyranical King, and all sorts of wonderful encounters. Dread Pirate Roberts' Princess Bride Page Yet another all the info you'd ever want page.
Harvey - Now, i haven't seen this one myself yet (and I keep getting yelled at to do so 0.0;;) but by most i've spoken with who have seen it, it is a classic. It's an old movie about a man with an invisible imaginary friend who is a big rabbit and named pooka.
Drop Dead Fred - A faveorite of mine, also dealing with imaginary friends. As a little girl, she had one, and now years later... he's baaaack. And he turns her life upside down.
Loreena McKennit - A MUST. Her voice is one that echoes through time. Of the celtic/world music genre, it is like listening to a fairy tale. Indeed, her songs convery whole stories. I highly recommend "Book of Secrets" and "The Visit". The Official Site
Hammerfall - A Power Metal band from Germany (as most tend to be). It's not very heavy metal at all. More like rock to me. Their songs are very emotional and inspiring. Great battle music, some mournful music. Check them out.Hammerfall Official WebsiteBlind Guardian - Another Power Metal band. They have an album called Nightfall in Middle Earth with all the songs completely taken from JR Tolken's Simerillion! It is excellent. Look up the songs on mp3.comr if you don't believe me! Also a lot of atmosphere sounds. Very useful. A fan page, One of the extreme few *working* pages I was able to find. :sigh:
