The sun shone brightly upon the Arthington Lane ground for this last ever annual Village match. The lunchtime BBQ was well supported by current and former players, members and committee members alike . Founder Members of Pool Mills C.C were represented by Freddie Midgeley and Bert Whitehead. Michael Whiteley represented his late father C.W. ‘Bill’ Whiteley, the original donator of the trophy some 47 years ago. Many former players were in attendance which added to the nostalgia of the day. John Metcalfe, Keith Thompson, Nick Thompson, Brian Martin, Mick Kelly, Mick Skillbeck, Jack Cawood, Barry Kendall, Bob Amos, Paul Huby, Alan Stead, Geoff Bielby, Gordon Wood, Mick Cryer, Geoff Perkins, John Holdsworth, Ron Hannam, Tracey Mahoney, John Mahoney to name but a few. The game inevitably brought up many family links to former players. One such figure being the late Ken Wilkinson, who did so much to promote sport in the Village and help create the Mill Club. His son Keith and grandsons, Jamie, Chris and David were all on the field of play, whilst other sons Steve and Peter watched from the boundary edge. Richard Wilkinson and sons Mark and Paul provided the Mill team with 6 Wilkinson’s in total! Opening the bowling for the Village was 15 year old Ben Hewitt, grandson of the late Brian Huby. Pool Mills won the toss and elected to bat. Conditions were still extremely wet and the game was only possible by playing on an old League wicket. The Mill made 111 all out with Clive Baldwin making 22. John Borneman (3-24) and Ben Hewitt (2-13) being the pick of the bowlers. Pool replied with opening stand of 50 with Chris Tweedie batting well for 26. A middle order crisis was avoided by John Borneman (19) and Martin Towers (14*). With 2 overs to go Richard Wilkinson returned to the attack and a sense of a unique Village occasion coming to an end was evident. Pool managed to secure victory with 4 wickets still intact. For the record the last ever run in this wonderful Competition was scored by Pool President Martin Towers and the last ever ball was delivered by Richard Wilkinson. Michael Whiteley presented his late fathers’ trophy to Pool Skipper Clive Singleton. Both Clive and the Mill skipper Keith Wilkinson expressed to the crowd what a great day it had been for the Village itself but also sadness for the demise of the Mill Club. The now overgrown state of the former Cricket field would break the heart of any cricket follower. Bill Whiteley’s wonderful foresight has given the Village many happy memories and friendships that remain to this very day. What a great shame that it has all had to come to an end………….or has it??
The second team have not played for the past two weeks due to rain. The first XI beat Silsden thanks to excellent bowling by Steve Wood, but had to settle for a losing draw against Knaresborough. See RESULTS for details.
Sunday 22nd August will see a unique Village event take place for the very last time. Many of you over the years will have taken part in the keenly fought Pool Village versus Pool Mills fixture. The cup began in 1957 and was the brain child of William Whiteley for 'annual competition in friendly rivalry'. The Village has always taken great pride in the fact that it fielded four teams every Saturday throughout the Summer. Former Mill players are to re-unite for one last game and we hope to encourage as many former players from both Clubs to be present on the day. To mark the occasion we will be holding a Club B.B.Q and get together from 12.30pm onwards and we would be very pleased to see you. We intend to hold the event on the lawns and Club patio areas, the P.S.S.C bar will cater for the thirsty! All of our match day sponsors will be invited to the B.B.Q. also by way of a thank you for their valued support. This will be the end of a Village sporting era and a great chance to reminisce I am sure you will agree? Please pass on details to other former players; we will also advertise the event in the local press and on our web-site. Please make every effort to attend and we look forward to seeing you and your families at the B.B.Q.
