Newspaper had stories today: Still trying to figure out whether the West Indies Cricket team (no its not a bunch of grasshoppers) will actually play here. More on that to come.
F.W. De Klerk, former president, a white guy, and Nelson Mandela, current president, a black guy, BOTH just got married (no, not to each other) and NEITHER of them married a south africa! Mrs De Klerk is Greek, Mrs Mandela is Mozambiquan!
Spent some time at work. Then I met a different one'a the guys from my company's local office who took me to his house for a Braai or Barbeque with his family and some friends.
We had beef, pork spare ribs, lamb chops, Boerwoers (Boer Sausage) on the grill. Boerwoers has mutton in it, its spicy, but not hot like Italian sausage, really good tho! My host, lives up on a hillside suburb, he explained that for all of South African history, you don't feel like you "own" your land until you put a fence around it. Part of the reason for the fences and walls is tradition. And Everyone has dogs, big dogs, The parents of the guy who invited me over last night had 3 HUGE german shepards, todays host has 2 dogs, I don't know breeds that well. We talked about electronics, politics, South africa etc. These folks often vacation in Mozambique.
There are Scuba shops around here, 400 km from the nearest drop of water. Kinda like in phoenix. Apparently, a lot of folks go to the beaches of Mozambique as well as SA. SA has got water on 3 sides.
When my host took me back to the hotel, a black guy came up and said hello and I was introduced to him. After a brief exchange of greetings with my host, he left, I then learned that he is the captain of the West Indies Cricket team here discussing this big trip thats in the news!
There is cricket on TV now and then, I'll never figure that crazy game out, but these folks seem to like it.
