Bill Poole's Trip to the
Republic of South Africa

Day 3
Sunday, 1-Nov-98

Up at 5 for the 5:30 phone call.

Then off to the office, check on the equipment. (Which, as can be inferred above, is in a tent on the roof, I've been interested in radio since I was a kid, this was like a Ham Radio Field Day!)

Back to rest for a while.

Back at 9:15 to take the data off the computer and prepare it to be emailed to HQ. That took 2 hrs, emailing it should be done about 5:30!!! There has got to be a better way!

Took a break from 2 to 4:30, walked around the Sandton Area. From Sandton Mall to Village Walk and beyond, a big, maybe 1 or 2 mile circle. There are several hotels at Sandton Mall, Holiday Inn Garden Court (you need to walk outside to get into the mall, but half the price of the Sun) Sun and Towers, both Intercontinental Hotels are connected to the mall. At village walk there is the Balalaika. The Hilton is nearby. There are numerous restaurants in the mall and more at Village Walk. There was a small african art souvenier stand at Village walk, I wish I had gone back.

The more I look at this place, the more I feel like I'm in a prison. All the security gates and fences and guards, and thinking about the warnings not to walk the streets. All the commercial buildings have security and are quite clean. The public library closed on sunday is not private property, so they cannot refuse admittance, and a lot of people were just hanging about and the place (on the outside) was quite dirty.

It looks like all the residential areas are "gated communities" (I hate those things) This is a Sunday, and I do NOT see folks walkin' around like in Downtown big US cities, or like Scottsdale old town, except in the Mall areas that have security. (LOTS more people on weekdays!) Almost none of the parking lots are open, they all seem to have security entrances, even for the mall and grocery stores.

I'm gonna get outa here before dark, they say its safe to walk during the day.
