BIRTHDATE: June 22, 1958 BIRTHPLACE: Royal Oak, Michigan MARITAL STATUS: Married to costume designer Ida Gearon, two children WHY HE DESERVES HIS BIG BREAK: What can we say about Bruce Campbell? Any horror fan worth his or her salt should know that Bruce Campbell doesn't really qualify as a 'THAT GUY', but he's still relatively unknown to those who tastes run more along the lines of The Princess Diaries. For those who have missed the boat on this charismatic, old fashioned movie star handsome performer, Bruce Campbell originated the lead role of Ashley J. "Ash" Williams in the Evil Dead series, by far one of the most memorable (and hysterical) horror series in film. From the very first film, a fairly straightforward "terror in the woods" horror movie, to the final installment Army of Darkness, a riotous adventure with Three Stooges-style antics, Ash is a most unlikely hero, a bit bewildered at what's going on around him and taking more than his share of beatings. But he always manages to come out on top at the end--even if it means replacing his severed hand with a chainsaw. Born in Michigan, Campbell met future Evil Dead writer/director Sam Raimi in high school. He starred in Raimi's very first directorial effort in 1977, a short film called It's Murder!, and since then, like Steve Buscemi to the Coen Brothers, Campbell has been a staple in nearly all of Raimi's films, including the upcoming Spider-Man. Few of Campbell's other films have reached the cult status of the Evil Dead series, but he's remained a solid favorite with horror/fantasy fans, and has attracted a new fan base with his short-lived but memorable TV series The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., and recurring appearances as "Autolycus" on Hercules and Xena, Warrior Princess. He also showed a surprisingly effective dramatic streak playing a cop who wants to avenge his father's murder in an episode of TV's Homicide. Bruce Campbell has recently published a book about his adventures in film, entitled If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor, and has a huge amount of input on his official website. How much more cool can an actor be who posts his personal e-mail address? None. None more cool. |
