WHY HE DESERVES HIS BIG BREAK:
Technically, Robert Carlyle has already had his big break.  After founding a theater company in his native Scotland and starring in the Scottish TV series Hamish Macbeth, he's one of the biggest stars in his home country.  Unfortunately, the biggest exposure he's gotten in the US was by playing a megalomaniac with a hole in his head in The World is Not Enough, the worst James Bond movie in the last thirty years (even the ones with Timothy Dalton).  Few people here know Robert Carlyle by name--but mention The Full Monty, and they'll know who you're talking about real quick.

Think of Carlyle as a more subtle version of Gary Oldman, someone who can change their appearance and demeanor with remarkable agility.  He's not just an actor, he's a
chameleon--a perfect example is his body of work between 1995 and 1999.  He started with playing a working class man stricken with multiple sclerosis in Go Now, then a violent drug dealer in Trainspotting, a lovable aspiring stripper in The Full Monty, an 18th century highwayman in Plunkett & Maclean, a 19th century cannibal in Ravenous, and, last but not least, author Frank McCourt's well-meaning but hopeless alcoholic father in Angela's Ashes.  Take that, Kevin Costner!

However, much like Russell Crowe, Robert Carlyle reportedly has no interest in becoming a big Hollywood star.  If all Hollywood has to offer him are more movies like
The World is Not Enough, who can blame him?
