At 49, country performer and songwriter Dottie West seems to be filled with boundless energy, both on and off stage. After a recent concert, she enjoyed a brief moment of relaxation on her bus. The bright red, skin-tight cowgirl outfit she wore on the stage has been replaced by a pair of slacks, a sweater and a blazer. But the flaming red hair, pearly white smile and flashing eyes were the same. “In 1980, I did 320 concerts, and 170 of those were with Kenny Rogers,” she said. “Last year, I did tours with Eddie Rabbit, the Oak Ridge Boys, Mel Tillis, the Gatlin Brothers and a lot with just us-me, my band and my vocalists.” Miss West is a songwriter with several Grammy nominations and one Grammy Award to her credit. She also won an award for a jingle she wrote for Coca Cola. “You will probably be hearing some of my own songs in the future,” she said., “but I’ll tell you, for the past four years especially I have really concentrated on being the singer and my concerts. I’m staying so buisy with concerts and travelling that I really haven’t taken time to write that much.” Miss West has been a country music performer for quiet a while, but her popularity has never greater. She has Kenny Rogers to thank for her greater visibility. “I think there was magic the first time we ever sang together and that was on “Every Time Two Fools Collide.” Dottie recalled. “We all felt that the chemistry or the mix or the blend of the voices was just magic.” Miss West has accomplished a lot, but she has goals for the future. “I would like to be a country entertainer of the year of the year,” she said. “And there’s time. I don’t say that I’ve got to do this in 1982 because I don’t want that kind pressure on me. But I really hope it happens because I’m just the kind of person who likes to be No.1 in whatever I’m doing. And I would still like to write some NO.1 songs and more awards as a writer.”
