Less than a month ago there was discussion about the placement of "Theme One"
on VdGG's Pawn Hearts...

After reading that this morning, I suddenly had a mission to find other
versions I could hear on the internet. All I found was a version by Cozy
Powell on his Best Of. You can hear it in RealAudio at CDNow.com

For those of us who know little about Cozy's music. . . track 2 ("Killer") is
NOT what you think.

Minstrel in the Gallery!! Yes!
Probably the most underrated and undermentioned album they made.

I like "Aenima" as well.

After having played at our local festival, Quart Festivalen in Kristiansand,
Norway, the band announced they would record a song dedicated to it, 'cause they
had had such a fun time and really dug the festival. Nobody believed them.

But they did! It's on Aenima. The title Aenima itself is also a reference to the
nordic character AE, they told. (original AE form withdrawn for compatibility
reasons)

Hi all,
I have read a really interesting interview with Robert Wyatt
about some of the musicians he's worked with if anyone cares to read it.
It's from What's Rattlin archives at:

Sad to say, these days it's quite representative. They've been heading
in the wrong direction since Beware of Darkness IMO.

Don't knock "the E-Bay phenomenon" completely -- it definitely has its
moments.

In the past two months, I've managed to find 3 CDs that have been out of
print now for a combined 29 years, and I won all 3 auctions for a
*combined* price of $26.97US. I don't know about you, but finding three
long-lost O-O-P gems that I've been avidly seeking for years, at an
average price of only $9US, is OK in my book.

Yes, you DO see some outlandish stuff on ebay and you have to know the
market for what you're looking for or you can get in pretty deep. But if
you keep your head screwed on straight and show some patience and
self-control, ebay *can* be a very effective tool, I guarantee it.

For the 180-degree flip side of how ebay can also be off-the-wall, check
out this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=147055454.
Somebody forwarded that URL around my office yesterday and I couldn't
believe my eyes!

My favourite bits of Tool are the odd little preludes. I swear these
were inspired by the GG preludes: the spinning coin, etc. There are a lot
of KC influences throughout. As opposed to the majority of Heavy Metal,
Tool are genuine craftsmen. I'll have to agree the ambience of Tool is dark
and disturbing, but it's genuine, not some braindead Black Sabbath
wannabe.

Skin is from the Beard's latest, Day for Night, already released. Their
earlier stuff is the most prog - The Light (1995) and Beware of Darkness
(1996) are best (though I like all their CDs very much).

Ginny asks what is a gamy leg?

Spelt GAME, it's an 18th century dialect word of uncertain origin meaning a
lame, injured leg, often used by war veterans when they apologetically
excuse themselves from athletic pursuits. 'I'd love to play for the Old
Puddletonians Cricket Eleven, but I can't because I'm having trouble with
my gamy leg.' It's a phrase that suggests long-term pain and disability
faced with a stiff upper lip and no complaining.

I liked the lyrics, by the way.

Bill O'Reilly wonders:

<< er.. what's a 'thingummy'?>>

It's the British-manufactured version of the classic 'thingamajig', an American inwention. Also known in various places as a 'thingamabob', 'doohickey', 'whatchamacallit', 'doojamaflappy', and 'whozeewhatsit'.
The nice thing about them is that they fulfill any number of useful functions; for instance, did you know that a thingummy can do stuff? I was pleased to learn that they, indeed, can.

Is that a basis for criticism? It seems to be in the UK, and I hate it.

There is alleged to be a new Tool release coming this year. They were
victims of their label's politics/demise/rebirth/re-demise/and re-rebirth.
The old label Zoo is now known [to make a very long and convoluted story
short] as Volcano. Label mate Matthew Sweet's new release is scheduled
firmly and a new Tool is supposed to appear in the fourth quarter.

In the meantime, may I recommend the excellent new releases from Guided By
Voices, The Verve Pipe, Doyle Bramhall and the already mentioned Richard
Thompson. And keep your eyes open for the spate of excellent new Cuneiform
releases including a new [reformed] Univers Zero and a great live release
from Von Zamla recorded in 1983. Just got advances on these and they are
outstanding.
