As far as MY first album, it was a gift from my dearly-departed
highly-talented guitarist brother Rick, who gave me "In the Court of the
Crimson King" for Christmas, 1969 (I was thirteen at the time). Needless to
say that since I had been listening to mostly Top 40, Beatles and Motown up
to that point, that gift changed my life forever.

Saw ELO at the Spectrum in Philadelphia during the "On the Third Day" era.
If I remember correctly, the
weather outside was rather nasty and ELO and the opening act, Al Stewart,
were late getting to the Spectrum. When Al Stewart finally came on about an
hour-hour and a half late, we all were chanting
"ELO...ELO...ELO" and booing. He played for about 10 minutes and walked off
the stage, flipping us the bird as he went. Ah, youth.

You were expecting mellotrons, perhaps? Minimoog? What's the
problem with trumpets? They were good enough for Beethoven, good
enough for Gabriel, they're good enough for me.

Unfortunately, as on Boil That, all that occasionally also includes a
distinct lack of melodic focus. Why must be gifted be so completely
focused on appearing to be obscure? What level of insecurity is
required to largely eschew melody for the sake of cleverness?
BTW, I do think Keneally is extraordinarily gifted, and Beer for
Dolphins was amazing in concert when I saw them.

My first GG LP was _Three Friends_, but if I absolutely had to choose a
single favorite it would probably be _Octopus_, with TF second. (More
honestly, it would be a tie between those two and one or two or three
others...)
In listing my first LPs earlier, I forgot to mention my first *prog* LP,
which would have been Tull's _Benefit_.

I have absolutely no idea what you mean, Rich. Or do I?
In the first place, my worst nightmare is much uglier than you, (you're not such a bad-lookin' old fart...I mean YOUNG fart!) and in the second place, MK's sense of melody suits me to a T. Really, Rich, that mystifies me, the idea that MK isn't melodic...nonsense! Not for everyone, perhaps, but I love it. He *has* matured since "Boil That...", you know. Quite wonderfully, I think. I loved BTDS, too.
It's a bit weird to me that so many folks think Keneally's music is obscure...he has a conscious desire to make it that way, it's true; but I, for one, see right through it and like (a LOT) what I find behind. To me, it's bleedin' obvious, and perfect.
Oh, well, just Tindalling around...Keneally Rules All Right!

So what exactly about the fact that he strives to make it that way
and succeeds is "weird" to you? I respect his decision to do this,
but it irks me nonetheless. I find Dust Speck to be incredibly
annoying to try and get through....I gave up last time I tried, and I
was alone on a plane with headphones and nothing better to do at the
time, to boot!
I know of other people who, as soon as something even vaguely
resembling a "catchy" melody appears, run the other way like Carl
Lewis. Torn comes to mind......it's not that I don't like "out" or
obscure things, it's just that I think that to limit one's self to
that exclusively is to miss out on a wonderful part of life. Variety
being the spice, and all that.......

Hail all!
Sorry I have been a bit out-a-contact, but I've been traveling a bit, etc.
I plan on diving back into things now leading up to the NYC Session!
Here's a start:
first album: Petula Clark "Downtown" (mid-sixties)
but the first "rock" album was, of course: In-A-Godda-Da-Vida...closely
followed by the first Steppenwolf album
first GG album: Octopus (and like Rich, it "may still be my favorite")
first GG concert (of 3 that I saw): October/November? 1972 (warm up for
Tull at the Springfield, Mass. Civic Center)
Also...Rich stated:
> November 1,1974 - midnight show
>at the Academy of Music in NYC, opening (!) for Focus - third row
>center seats - they played "In a Glass House" this night, starting
>from where the heavy guitars enter, also did Way of Life.
I actually saw this same tour the night before on Halloween in Springfield
with John Martyn warming up before GG...Front row in a small theatre, and
as I may have reported previously to O-R, this was the night that I wore my
"Halloween costume on the INSIDE" (vague hallucinogenic reference #-0 ).
That's it for now!

Hi!
Could it be that you saw a CD by the UK band "THE FYREWORKS"?
As far as I know they released 1 s/t album on Festival Records. It's a fine
but not extremely sensational prog outfit, strongly rooted in the seventies,
although they only came to recording in the nineties. They strive for a
vintage seventies sound by using intruments from this particular era. Among
their 'thank you's' are Genesis, Yes, Van Der Graaf Generator and Mike
Oldfield.
I particular like their - instrumental - melodic feel and the latent british
folk influences (Tull-ish/Oldfieldish). I'm not too fond of their singer,
who has a rather weak voice IMO.
Last year I catched them on tour in Holland and enjoyed the concert very
much. Especially as they started playing Focus' 'Hocus Pocus'. We all had a
jolly good time!
Worthwhile to check out this - very british - band, but don't expect too
much.
Cheers,
