I didn't want to pass on this thread: first album: Jethro Tull "Living in the Past". The friend who took me to my first concert, -which was of course Jethro Tull-bought me a record of my choice, and I chose this one. I still enjoy it very much, specially the live side: dharma for one and by kind permission of... It was a very special time for me, I was still at elementary school and was 10 years old, but this friend, who was actually the older brother of one of my schoolmates, he was alredy into pretty heavy stuff, ie. Tull, Uriah Heep, Crimson. I remember I had to save for about 6 weeks to have the 6 dollars to buy the ticket. Sadly, I had to wait for another year to see my next show, because my parents had gone pretty mad because I had been in a concert "with that hippie" first GG album: Playing the Fool. The first piece that captured me was "Funny Ways", then I played this LPs until it got pretty scratched. Then I went to buy what I could find in these days (1979-1980). But Octopus (and yes, like Doctor Skull and Rich), it "may still be my favorite". No not maybe, that's my favourite. first GG concert: LAST week, in a dream I had after a night of Guinness and Heineken. They played all my favourite pieces! I'll never forget it! Slurrpt! sorry. === Best Regards, Jesús Tapia __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? No, I didn't sit her (the ex-wife) on a speaker -- like what some of us saw demonstrated in the Howard Stern movie. Rather, I played my favorites a little on the loud side while the pregnant woman was in the room with the largest speakers. The play list included, though not exclusively, Fripp, Saxon (Denim and Leather), Peter Gabriel, Riot (Fire Down Under), Random Hold, Genesis, Yes, ELP, and of course a LOT of Gentle Giant -- which my ex hated. Basically, the experiment was designed to pre-educate my child. It worked, although she later rebelled as a teenager and gravitated to Rap. Now, however, she is listening to Dave Matthews, Bjork, and other interesting bands. Conclusion = Except for a momentary lapse of reason the experiment worked admirably. So far, after 4 or 5 spins, I like it very much. DreamTheater fans will enjoy the cd but don't expect DT. Actually, it is reminiscent of DT but without the "in your face metal prog" that the last couple of DT albums are flavored with. I especially like the cuts that are collaborations with Trent Gardner of Magellan. Anyway, the album rocks, it is hard and soft, straight ahead and progressive, intelligent and well produced. Mike Keneally, Mike Mangini, Bryan Beller, and Matt Guillory sound like they have been playing together for years. The vocals have all the beauty, power, and soul that Labrie is known for. If anyone on this list likes DT you will probably like this one. The track line up is almost the same, but there is no electric bass, no electric guitar, nor drums. The album is very good. Wetton's voice is almost perfect- only in 30 Years, does he have a problem with the high notes. The production is crystal clear. This is the line-up of songs: Book of Saturday, Heat of the Moment, Sole Survivor, Quilmes, Battle Lines, Arkangel, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes, Easy Money, Emma, 30 Years, Build Me Now, Rendezvous 6:02. (Quilmes is a solo keyboard piece) With all the bellyaching about Wetton, I must admit I've really enjoyed this "unplugged" concert recording. (By the way, while I was examining the credits, I noticed that lyricist Palmer-James was indeed credited for the appropriate Crimson pieces. I just counted the number of Tull CDs I have and they add up to 38! Granted, some are bootlegs. But hear me when I say this: I haven't been able to say "here's a Tull album in which NO SONG is weak," since "A". Don't get me wrong -- I love Crest Of A Knave and all the rest of 'em, especially Roots to Branches, but these songs are just BETTER and more consistent! And there isn't a weak one in the bunch. These songs are all accessible, yet strangely NOT self-conscious in the least! If anyone else is debating getting the album first or seeing the band first, here's my two cents -- the more familiar with the songs you are, the more you will appreciate them. Frank Carvalho is correct. Some of the songs that struck me as less memorable at first suddenly grew on me -- a.w.o.l., Wicked Windows -- and none of the songs have failed to get better every time I listened to them. Seriously! These songs stand the test of repeated listenings. Rik Beck says: I understand, but there's your mistake. Give this one repeated listenings. Trust me, I have a lot of new music in the car, but I keep foregoing everything and sticking in this Tull album! And it gets better every time. To each his own, of course, but I say this is the best album since "A"! And the keyboard tracks sound better than anything in the past twenty years. Good stereo Lesley miking, Ian!
