I'm anxious to hear it, also. The following is from Adrian Belew's website
about his involvement with this recording:
The next project was a bit more well known. February 8 through 12 I worked
with Trent Reznor on the next NINE INCH NAILS record . It was fascinating
to see how he makes records; a totally different approach than mine. I love
the sounds he gets. He had 40 tracks for me to attack, none of which had
vocals. For three days we worked long hours and I played some of the most
aggressive guitar playing I've done in a while. There were several tracks
which required Trent to manipulate the pedals on the floor while I played
endless solos. We joked that the two of us made a pretty good guitarist. I
also played cello, mandolin, lap steel, and string bass. Trent has a devoted
crew of engineers and computer experts and a first class studio. He was
kind enough to show me through his renovated historic New Orleans home as
well. I have no idea what the record will ultimately sound like but I can't
wait to hear it.

If the Gap used Zappa's music, they'd have to change their name to the
Steaming Succulent Ever-Widening Gooey Drippy Runny Kind Of A Hole. Which
would sound really good with their old '70s jingle--you know, that
basso-buffo voice demanding "Fall into the Steaming Succulent Ever-Widening
Gooey Drippy Runny Kind Of A Hole!"

The last I heard from Tangerine Dream, some years back, they were using this
real stiff of a sax player who, as I said at the time, made Kenny G. sound
like King Curtis.

_Roxy_ was actually a fairly straight live album, with only one song
("Cheepnis") really heavily reworked in the studio. In his later years, FZ
returned to straight, overdub-free live albums, like _Broadway The Hard Way_,
_The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life_ and _Make A Jazz Noise Here_,
plus archival releases like the YCDTOSA series. You're lucky I have to go to
work in a few minutes or I'd go on for a half hour about this.

That's what the puritans want you to think. (Mencken: A puritan is
someone who has the sneaking suspicion that somebody, somewhere, is having
a good time.)
I don't think of obscene and unchaste as being disgusting, personally,
and since Oscar Brand titled a whole series of his albums "Bawdy Songs
and Backroom Ballads," I have to suspect he doesn't either. (Just heard
him on NPR earlier this year, after hearing nothing of him in decades;
he has a new CD out with historic songs about presidential campaigns.)

(D)My father had no outspoken musical tastes. It was not important enough

(D)What a joke. Thankfully, I don't say these kinds of things to my kids,

(D)They both have many other talents as well, which I look forward to
(J)helping them nurture as opposed to punching them in the head (LVB).
(D)Anyway, my mom used to lull me to sleep with Peter Nero, Mario Lanza,

Hi, fellow O-R-ers,
I'm turning to you with a problem. You might have read that I encountered
problems downloading the concert from the DGM website.
Now that these problems are solved, it seems the concert has been taken down
from the website. I accessed it today - and couldn't find it anymore. Instead, I
only found a newsletter application form.
Should this concert indeed have been taken down, is there anybody out there who
can make me a CD-R copy of the show - which I would just like to have!
Just tell me how much it costs (incl. p/p), and I'll take it off your hands.
The better the sound quality, the happier I'd be.
So...anyone, please?
Thanks a million in advance.

I seem to have stirred up a mess o reaction when I asked why nobody mentions
Leo KotTke. Among other things, folks say he is incredible in concert and

For some strange reason that reminds me of one of the greatest shows I
have ever been to. The one artist who seemed the most comfortable with the
audience and held them by their funny bones for the whole show, was one
Arlo Guthrie...no shit. If you get a chance to see him, he will amaze you...
not so much with incredible guitar work, but just his sheer joy of being
on stage, and the amazing control he has over the crowd. You may not buy
all of his CDs on your way out, or even be humming one of the tunes (well,
you may be humming a tune), but you will have one hell of a good time.

It was pretty good, but most notably the Star Trek folks finally gave us
a two-part cliff-hanger that didn't use up all the good stuff on the first

one in some feeble fashion, leaving us unfullfilled, like the writers just

On the Passport thread, while I agree for the most part that the pre-78
stuff was best (Cross-Collateral and Infinity Machine are both great,
great fusion albums), I did catch a show they played on Long Island in
1979 during which their guitarist at the time (whose name, shamefully,
escapes me right now -- it's been a L-O-N-G week) played one of THE most
beautiful solos I've ever heard on Ataraxia. Tear your heart right out

Good thread! My dad was/is a jazz musician. He only plays piano now (a
Baldwin baby grand) but in high school, college and the navy played tenor
sax, clarinet and harmonica along with the ivories. Needless to say we had
a lot of music in the house. I heard a lot of Coleman Hawkins, some Ben
Webster. A real lot of Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, George Shearing. He was
fond of vocalists too, mostly Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Yeah, he
had the Herb Alpert & the T.B. Whipped Cream cover too! :-) He also had a
lot of show music, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Sound of
Music, etc. and of course we had classical too but I remember less of
this....Beethoven and Wagner (my mother is German!), some Bach, Vivaldi,
Mozart. There's more, for sure, but that's what I remember. He was a snob,
my old man. He couldn't cut us kids a break over our tastes at any time,
regardless of our age. When I was 12 and groovin' on the Beatles he used to
come into my bedroom and say "why do you listen to this crap?" Fortunately
the love of music was hereditary and now, while he still doesn't like a lot
of my stuff (King Crimson....yeah, right!) he at least has grudging respect
for Coltrane and Miles Davis, Davy Graham even Soft Machine and Gentle Giant
(among others). the only stuff I can get him to acknowledge he actually
likes is jazz: Hall/Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Mark Whitfield, some of the
Davis and Coltrane stuff (even though they get into that fusion, and
expressionistic and free jazz stuff :-) ). He's always been that way and
he's 74- no changing him now. I just try not to have on anything close to
rock music when he comes over here.

I had just heard/seen it on the video recently (the Hendrix at Woodstock
video I mentioned above) but I first heard it on Woodstock II. It's in both
the "original" Hendrix : Woodstock on MCA from several years ago and on
the new Hendrix Woodstock recordings Speaking of, I can't recall the
title-it just came out and I assume it is from the Hendrix estate
recordings. If anyone has experience heh heh with this new one I'd like to
hear of it. It listed several songs that were not on the MCA
release....Gotta be killer I'd think.

After I've put a little more distance between the present and the music
memories I share with my ex, I will re-purchase the second Altered State
CD. I can't recall the title right now, but I'd recognize the cover. As
I recall, this progressive band sounded a lot like a cross between Asia
and King Crimson with Adrian Belew. In fact, the vocalist sounds a lot
like Belew. Have any of you heard their first release? I understand it's
a bit more eccentric.

I'm sure everyone on O-R knows about GorGG. For those who don't and scan
the digests looking for MY posts exclusively...here goes. GorGG
officialy stands for Global On Reflecion Giant Gathering. It will be
held October 9th, 1999 at the Heartland Brewery in NYC. Special guests
include Geir Hasnes (boy, I hope I pronounced that correctly) and,
hopefully, none other than Derek Shulman. There will be in the
neighborhood of 50 O-R listers present. Lurkers, bandwidth busters, and
double dippers to boot. Don't miss this opportunity to be a part of the
largest assemblage of O-R members ever (or the most GG fans in one place
since 1980)! For those already attending...I responded to Dan Barrett's
earlier post and asked him to contact Derek about coming to GorGG. Dan
doesn't get GorGGmail...so it was a good thing I wrote him. I asked
Hiltonius to send Dan the pertinent info needed to get Derek to the
party and indicated previously that all of Derek's expenses (i.e. food,
drink, transportation) would be covered. I think it would be a good idea
for everyone planning to attend to bombard Dan with letters impressing
upon him our desire to have Derek at GorGG. One more thing...has anyone
heard from v-bert? Later, mammie whammy.

Hail all,
My parents met while they were each attending the Eastman School of Music in
Rochester, NY. My dad was a band director before later entering the
business world. My mom played violin in several symphony orchestras.
Needless to say there was lots of music around our house. My dad was a jazz
man, while my mom preferred classical. A couple of dad's favorites included
Red Garland and a jazz pianist named Paul Smith.
They encouraged my older brother and sister and myself to play music. As
such we each took up our chosen instruments and joined the school band when
we reached the eligible grade of 5.
My dad was also a composer and arranger. One Christmas when I was but a
little tyke, he arranged Christmas carols for the family to perform
together; dad on piano, mom on violin, brother on drums, sister on flute and
baby Brad on trumpet. It was a lot of fun. Somewhere a cassette tape of
our performances exists but, unfortunately, no one seems to know where it
is.
Neither of my parents cared too much for the rock music I would play.
Although they would appreciate it. A couple of instances I specifically
remember was my mom commenting on the nice chord progression in Firth of
Fifth, and her being totally caught off guard by the funky 7/8 meter in
Patchwork by the Dixie Dregs. She was kind of moving to the beat until that
part kicked in causing her to lose track of the down beat and surprisingly
shout "What are they doing?"
Finally, yes, my dad had Whipped Cream and Other Delights.
Later,
Brad

I don't know if this is old news to you guys, but Belew was involved with
NIN's "The Downward Spiral" also.

Actually that IS news to me, because I didn't care much for that release.
As a result, I paid no attention to the credits. That does give me some

Hi John --
I'm a big Reznor fan, though I've liked the studio releases less and less as
each one has come out. Unfortunately The Fragile continues this annoying
trend. I made it through the entire first disc and most of disc two, and
heard no new ground broken. It has the usual lovely design, however, a
double digipack. On the upside, I'm sure it will be great live, as almost
all his material is: having seen them six times, plus the Woodstock 94 PPV,
I can verify that!
Best NIN show: the Bowie/NIN "Outside" tour. Started with NIN, after a dozen
songs a spotlight came up downstage when the vocals started on a song --
crowd went nuts, thinking it was Bowie. Well -- Bowie was singing -- from
offstage! He came on with his sax in mid-song and wailed! One by one the
members of Bowies band joined NIN, and one by one the NIN players left the
stage as the set progressed. Ultimately it was just Bowie's band and Trent.
They did one last song together, then Trent left and Bowie performed
"Outside" from start to finish. he returned to encore with "Life On Mars"
and one more old track, I've since forgotten which-- I'll have to search out
the set list, I've got it somewhere still, I think. Amazing show!
I'll give the CD another couple of listens at some point.

I don't know if any of you enjoy Nine Inch Nails or not, but, if so I
noticed that Rezner has a new double CD release out entitled "The
Fragile". I don't have it as yet, and frankly I think I'll gather a few
reviews and try to listen to some of it before buying. I feel as though
he's lost something since "Broken" and "Fixed". If anyone has heard the
new one I'd appreciate a review.
