My parents didn't hae a very large collection of music, but
I did go through their record collection many times as a
child and I found the following gems:

Brubeck "Take Five" and "Gone With the Wind"
Ahmad Jamal (sp?) - can't remember the LP title but I liked
it as a kid.
Stan Getz / Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto (an incredible
album!)
lots of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan.
Fiddler on the Roof (OK, maybe it's cheesy, but I LOVED it
as a kid [and now my daughter is into it])
My parents also had a bunch of Herb Alpert LPs, including
(of course) "Whipped Cream and other Delights".

I have my parents to thank for my introduction to jazz
music, these albums got me interested in jazz.

BTW, has anyone seen the hilarious parody of that Herb
Alpert whipped cream cover, by Soul Asylum? It's called
"Clam Dip and Other Delights" and it has a sort of grungy
looking dude covered in clam dip, in pretty much the exact
same pose as appears on the Alpert LP (well, he's not giving
us "that look"). Pretty funny -- CDNow has an image of the
cover, do a search for Soul Asylum.

******************

Kathy asked for examples of mellotron -- probably the most
famous example would be the opening of the Beatles
"Strawberry Fields". It's that thing that sounds like a
Martian flute.

A more modern example: have you heard Fiona Apple's CD
"Tidal" ? The tune "Criminal" has a prominently figured
mellotron, esp. noticeable in the last minute of the song.
Of course, this may be a mellotron patch or a sample (I
don't have the CD with me to check) but it sounds just like
a mellotron to me. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm
wrong!).

Cool that you mention Bunny, I was at Wal-Mart in the Great White North last
week looking for more Grammavision cut-outs. I lucked out big time!!! Last
February, I found Robert Wyatt's "Mid '80s" compilation. Figuring I'd luck
out again, I scoped the cheapie CD bin and I found Kazumi Watanabe's
"Kilowatt" for a meager $3.96. Killer line-up too! Patrick Moraz, Wayne
Shorter, Bunny on bass...woah! An excellent CD. Reminds me of a more
high-tech Jeff Beck's "Guitar Shop". Bunny is amazing on bass(within the
contents of this recording). :)

Dr. Skull writes:

Hmmm. When they get heavy they might a little. If you like the Buttholes,
you shouldn't have a problem with Voivod. ;) Expect to hear a lot of musings
in the heavy metal and no wave field, along with some nifty time
signatures(like KC's "Lark's T"). They will most likely take a couple of
listens Skip. The drumming is kind of tribal in a strange kind of way. Lots
of dissonance throughout, try and listen while in a weird mood. Voivod isn't
the happiest of all music...they sing of nuclear war, destruction,
manipulation, alienation. Kind of like Black Sabbath(they never ever sing
about sex), but in a Sci-Fi sort of way. :)

I'm going. :) I'll be driving to NYC all night to hit the check-in time at

Saturday. My wife and I will do the standard New Yawk tour on the
Sunday...Central Park...Statue of Liberty, etc.

I'm not, and I won't......what I WILL say is this:

I am much less concerned with "plans" than most, but I will gladly
try to help accommodate anything that people want to do on Friday
night, up to and including getting my large ass to the Mr. Class and
Quality Inn to enjoy some food and beverages with my pals.

Saturday I will not be available much prior to GORGG, as I have a
wedding commitment to fulfill with Honey, however, I am game for a
meeting on Sunday. I have no interest, nada, zip, zilch, zero, in
walking around shopping for CDs. Anyone else similarly repulsed by
the notion of spending this valuable time shopping for anything
should contact me so that we can develop some kind of alternate "game
plan" for that day - sightseeing, museums, sports, music shows,
jammie in the park, more food and drink, whatever.....

All right.....first of all, if I were just a tad more paranoid, I'd
say that Tillman's following me around scrutinizing about my every
   word.

Nahh, it's just that Tony's work here is so creative that looking into
it closely is completely fascinating.

F'rinstance the right hand is a mix of "brass" and "3 strings". That
means that he wedged the track selector between the "brass" track and
the "3 strings" track, literally positioning the tape head between the
two tracks, to get a mechanical mix of the two. That mix will change
somewhat randomly for each note due to tape alignment (which really
shows on the live recording.)

The original 'Tron was not really meant to do that, and not all the
tracks are in tune with each other. And he gracefully handles the
8-second tape limit throughout.

The whole sound taken together is remarkably spooky, and unlike
anything anyone had done before.

And the chord progression is wonderful. (Is that one of those
Neopolitan 6ths we studied in music theory class in there? I have to
go over it some time.)

Hi All, I spoke to Bert this morning,[after Ant]and he is recovering quite
well from the staphlococcus, which is known in these parts as "The Flesh

struck one of our major politicians, resulting in amputation,I was very
concerned after talking to Bert last week and hearing he had contracted
this very serious disease,I'm feeling much better about him now and his
chances of attending GORGG,which he feels are about 70%,lets all pray for a
full recovery regardless...

On a very peripherally related note, last night's Shawn Phillips show (the man was in fine voice, just fine)
brings to mind the fact that Shawn sang harmony on Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. So you've all heard him and loved

I've been in touch with Michael Clay and he gave me an update on the
status of Hands to share with the list:

Michael had to attend to some touring in Europe for most of this year.
Therefore, the Hands stuff had to take a back burner. He has not spoken
to Ernie Myers, the guitarist, for a while and doesn't know the exact
state of things as far as the studio work and where they stand on tracks
for the upcoming album. But he thinks they were pretty close to getting
the tracks all done, after which it will only be a matter of mixing and
mastering.

As for missing their scheduled Progfest appearance, apparently the
promoters didn't firm things up for the gig until it was too late in the
game and by then some band members had committed to other, paying,
matters.

Hey, I've got this too. Back in the early to mid 70's my fellow prog
friends and myself would try to outdo each other by discovering some obscure
prog band first. The best way to do this was to get stuff from the import
bins. My best score was Camel's first album but Seventh Wave "Things To
Come" was another one I bought. I still have the album but it's been at
least 20 years since I've played it.

Hi all:

Just received the new YES album ( The Ladder ) that I ordered from
Tower Records, and wow. Unbelievable. I was a bit worried about Yes
coming out with a intense album again- no more fear. Great album~ Nice
to know that in 1999 we can still get good progressive music from such
great progressive icons. IMHO, if you have a question about the music
continaed on this album, cast them aside. Am really looking forward to
them playing in Central New York whenever they schedule a date. And I end
this to play the Ladder once again...peace.

left the quoted message intact in case anyone came in the middle and didn't know what the subject was.
It was the Sgt. Pepper. However, in my usual fit of accuracy, I got the song wrong. Though there is gossip between
fans that Shawn sang on Lucy, he is only officially acknowledged on the web page as singing in Lovely Rita- Meter Maid.

He did, however, give George Harrison his first sitar lesson.
    Go to:
    http://www.etsmtl.ca/pers/jboisono/shawnphillips/friends/index.htm
for more info. I'm real up on him today because I saw him play last night for the 9th time. I'm almost grateful in a
selfish way that he's not more popular- his shows are still cheap!

Hi, folks:

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety
at .

The biggest news seems to be the Happy the Man reissues on our One Way page
!!! Happy the Man/Happy the Man and
Crafty Hands - After all these years, the wait is finally over. At least it
is for adventurous music fans who rightly regard the two albums Happy the
Man released on Arista Records more than 20 years ago as a holy grail for
aural gratification. Hailed then and now as two of the finest progressive
rock albums ever made, 1977's self-titled Happy The Man and 1978's Crafty
Hands are both filled with wondrous, genre-leaping music that transcends
time, place and easy categorization. Now, thanks to One Way Records, which
had been inundated with requests from Happy The Man fans, for the first time
these two classic releases are each available in this country on CD in their
entirety. Better still, they have been meticulously remixed by the band's
synthesizer wizard, Kit Watkins, and reissued with the same art work that
was featured on the original vinyl versions.

In addition, the newsletter has the latest info about releases from
Rykodisc, Voiceprint, LoLo Records, a Renaissance BBC release on Wounded
Bird, free downloads from King Crimson and Steve Hackett, King Crimson's
30th anniversary release of Court of the Crimson King, John Paul Jones,
Jansen Barbieri and Karn, Mike Keneally, new Cuneiform releases, The Lonely
Bears (with Terry Bozzio), Spock's Beard and Neal Morse, David Sylvian, John
Wetton, Wendy Carlos, tour dates for Bon and Project Lo, and the latest info
on new and forthcoming progressive imports! Definitely more prog info than
you can shake a stick at!!!

Genesis' "Foxtrot" LP/CD is a wonderful mellotron reference work. Whether
it's a 2-manual, single manual, with or w/o Hammond, stand alone or
multi-tracked with other instruments...it showcases the mellotron as an
instrument and how it can be used. Can you HEAR the tron? Undoubtedly. All
through the LP, I might add...

I also think Yes had some nice mello moments, like on "Close to the Edge".
Many signature moments for the venerated instrument. Yeah, the Moodies did
some nice things as well. There, I said it. I'm out of the closet!

Subject: gg: a possible purchase?

Hi to all!!

My name is Dave Newby, and I'm 44 years old. I saw GG as the back-up to
Jethro Tull in either the spring of '72 or '73 in Rome and immediately became
a fan. Money was always tight back then...I only remember owning cassette
copies of Three Friends and IaGH. Fortunately, I had a friend in college who
got into GG too, so I was able to listen to everything up to and including
Interview. When I discovered Dan's web page this past spring, it blew me
away!!! I had NO IDEA that ANYBODY remembered this group, much less that
someone was releasing them in CD format! I almost have all of their original
releases now; MP is on order locally, and, like everyone else, am waiting
impatiently on IaGH.

By the way, I have been trying to subscribe to this digest since March, but
only succeeded last week. (Please don't flame my computer illiteracy too
bad!)

Anyway, here's my question: Greg Walker at Syn-Phonic has
listed at $15 US. I know about it from Dan's site and it sounds too good to
be true...what gives? I should jump on it, right?

Another question: I just got Gryphon's Red Queen/Raindance from Doug Larson
(AWESOME service, BTW---mailed the money order on Thurs and received it the
following Thursday!) I LOVE IT!!! I ordered it based on reading somewhere
that a lot of GG fans like Gryphon, especially Red Queen. I was wondering if
I would be as pleased, ar almost as pleased with the combo release (also
available from Doug) of Gryphon/Midnight Mushrumps. Guess I should say that
what I like about them is the way they feature those classical instruments,
like the bassoon.

Last question...are there any opinions out there of a Dutch group called
Supersister? Greg Walker's catalog says they are "great crazy prog if you
like GG".

Thanks for your time and any responses,

dave newby

We ALL remember, and relive, and enjoy. Collectively, we know EVERYTHING.

Giant Tracks is a tribute CD performed by members of this very list, and then
some. It is definitely worth having, and $15 is a good price.

Buy every Supersister LP/CD you can find. Some GG-like moments, great
stuff. "Crazy Prog" is a nice description, but not THAT crazy...good prog
though.
