I agree. In particular, listen to Can Utility and the Coastliners.

As I did last year with GG, I have recently provided an all Todd Rundgren
program to Steve Taaffe at Radio Free Kansas (http://www.tafcommedia.net).
This program covers Todd's three decades of recorded musical output
(although not in sequential order), from "Nazz" to "The Individualist".
Steve has just posted the first half of the program on the website; part two
will be posted at a later date (I'll let you know when I know).
Check out this "Ikon" of American popular music.

No, you're just discussing with the moderator of the mellotronist mailing
list,
and there's been a lot of talk about this intro lately.
This issue of 'Watcher of the Skies' is one that really ought to be in a FAQ
of
mellotron sound. The later live recordings are M400 and organ, but the
'Genesis Live'
one is the MKII. I think the MKII is right there on the front picture. Some
of the
sound is routed through a Leslie though, making it sound more organ-like.

Hello All:
with all the talk of Strawberry FF ! I felt I had to mention.
the Pip Pyle's version on 7 Year Itch blows the Beatles
right out of the water....
don't get me wrong I loved The Beatles version. but Pip's
treatment is unreal. the 1st half is a jazz adaptation
with Pip playing a slow swing beat, with Barbara
Gaskins singing so beautifully. then the 2nd half kicks in
and oh my god ! It kicks ass so bad... it's unreal.
Phil Miller & Dave Stewart take over.
BTW the best mellotron stuff is on the early Crimson albums.
the title track of In the Court Of the Crimson King is astounding.
as is the title track of In the Wake of Poseidon.
the early Moody Blues . used one of the first 4 prototype
Chamberlains, if my info is correct. the Chamberlain
blew the white mellotron away, more voicing and variations of
those voices, it was an amazing invention
1. Chamberlain himself had #1
2. McCartney had #2
3. the Moody Blues had #3
4. Greg Phelan had #4th

And our pal Claudannio answers:
>Red Queen is their best, save your money and stop there.
I'll take exception to that Mr. Claudio! :-) It may be true that Red Queen
is the more overtly "rock" recording of the first four (the only ones I'll
address as I really despised Treason)....I regard the first as being
"folkier", the second (MM) as being "classicler" :-) and Raindance as being
"poppier". Now before you all get yer britches in an uproar let me just say
that the general tone of all the recordings is similar but each has a couple
of tunes that swing the recording into those general categories I noted
above (ie: Kemp's Jig on the 1st, Blackbird on Raindance, etc). My own two
cents is that MM is absolutely essential Gryphon and the first and Red Queen
are not far behind. Given Dave's assertion that he likes the overall sound
of the "classical instruments" I don't think you can just dismiss the first
two. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Red Queen make a move to
incorporate more keyboard work than the two previous? that's the way I
recall it anyway; it's been awhile on that one.
Welcome to the list Dave,

Well, let me say this. I suspect by Sunday might I might be feeling a
little crisp around the edges (and if the rest of you GORGGers aren't you're
not partying hard enough ;-)) and this band would provide a pleasant "soft
landing" for the weekend. I've NEVER been to the Bottom Line so it has that
attraction for me as well. The band doesn't carry many hallmarks of the
Natalie Merchant era. Live, they occasionally rock with a 60's energy but
more often these days they have a sort of impressionistic pop sensibility
about them that reminds me a bit of 18th century courtly dances. I suppose
this comes off because of the pleasant airy rhythms they employ, in
combination with Mary Ramsey's violin work and her charming, lilting vocals.
They are not unlikely to throw in some Sandy Denny compositions (especially
since they recorded her classic "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" on their
last cd) and material from the John and Mary duo recordings usually shows up
some too. The other element of this is that Mary Ramsey is a very special
presence on stage. Perhaps the most enticing female performer I've seen
since I fell in love with Annie Haslam the first time I saw her. She exudes
an amazing combination of innocence and sexual energy that the men I know
just lose it over. Think of the forbidden fruit and you get the idea.
I think it's the sort of thing I'd just say "wait and see" because my
primary purpose of attending this GORGG gig is to meet and party with all of
you knuckleheads. If anyone is fried to a crisp and is up for just vegging
at a good show on Sunday night I could probably be talked into it.
Interested parties can mail me privately.

Subject: gg: v-bert in hospital; Julian's cat
Talked with Bert on the phone this morning. He really likes getting phone
calls. It's a direct line, so you won't have to speak Norwegian: +47
38106079. He said his leg was up over his head and hoped to be able to make
an October 8th flight to GORGG (doctors had given him 70% chance, but he
thought that after another doctor's visit today it would be up between
70-80% chance). He's excited to hear that Julian is going to be there (as
am I!). He thought that at first it might be a joke, but I told him that
Julian had asked Rich for reservations at the Heartland, and he believed it
was for real after I told him that.
Julian, what's your cat's favorite band? Voivod -- or Spock's Beard?
(sorry . . .) I have trouble believing that a cat docile enough to stand an
all-day car ride would agree to produce a particular "present" for Rich on
cue, but, you never know! If the cat's there, I will sing the Thai cat
song, no matter how badly it behaves.
