Toltec... Jon really likes Carlos Castaneda and Don Juan Matus.
Carlos has been gone over a year now....He's joined Don Juan in the world of
the little red bugs.... sigh...

Sad news.
I didn't think HoJo was doing much at present, he certainly is long
overdue a few gigs in the UK. Is he busy in the States?

You know when you get a thought, and it refuses to go away? I've
resisted the idea for some time, but it won't go away so I'll make an
attempt at exorcism by writing this:
I listen to the song On Reflection, and ponder over the taut lyrics;
when was the song conceived? It carries a message (in parts of the lyric
at least) that would be apt for TPaTG. It could therefore have been
conceived, but not used, at an earlier stage. Perhaps there were
difficult choices to make for TPaTG, with some songs left over until
"album 7" was due; so I am left to wonder if any _other_ songs on Free
Hand were re-writes from TPaTG sessions? (Similar questions come up from
other consecutive albums).
A more likely scenario is that On Reflection was at an embryonic stage
and needed more work, so this would mean that the song only got finished
after the band ended the recording of TPaTG. As a result the lyric has a
different slant.
There are counter-arguments; for one thing songs that did not make the
first album then got "mothballed" and never used subsequently. No real
surprise in this. Conditions weren't the same. I realise that those
early, discarded tracks would be hard to place on ATT and are simply
inappropriate for TF; by then the band had lost interest in them.
For later material, it might have been rather different. Possibly.
I would love to ask a band member about this if I got the chance.
If the 'gathering' goes ahead maybe someone will ask on my behalf?

I have seen several replies in the negative to this query, which sort of
surprises me. I'll be the first to admit that the Barrett solo albums are
kind of raw and thrown together using whatever psychologically coherent
moments he could sustain at the time. Yes it is sad.
But for someone who "has all the Floyd on CD" and much prefers the early
Floyd (like me), these albums absolutely require investigation, if not
ownership.
Lyrically speaking, they are brilliant--and I can draw plenty of connections
to Piper from them. I love the songs too, although I confess I also only
listen to them once in a great while. I also am amazed at *some* of the
previuosly unreleased solo stuff that appears on "Opel".
Doesn't anyone else have an interest in the art that was being produced by a
genius while he was losing his mind? I was interested in this long before
FOX started making TV shows.
Oh, BTW, on the "surely someone that was involved with the early Floyd can
not be all bad ?" part of the post, some reflectioners may find it
interesting that in the Roger Waters tour of the East coast he has changed
at least four of the venues AFTER tickets have already gone on sale, to
provide for larger stages to accomodate a big screen and other production
concerns. Example: Syracuse show was postponed and moved to Albany!
A friend of mine has a couple of extra tix to Jones Beach which he's
offering at face value if there is interest in the Long Island area--
Currently(!) the show is at Jones Beach on Sat. August 7. E-mail me
privately, but I probably won't reply until Monday or Tuesday.

That was the last Juno before MIDI wasn't it?

Yes it was filtered white noise. Apparently white noise has an equal amount
of energy per Hz of bandwidth whereas Pink has an equal amount of energy per
octave of bandwidth if you can get your head around that idea. In practice
white is more random and unpredictable over the audio spectrum and pink is
more even and useable.

And lotsa other anal(ytical) stuff. I just wanted to say Nicely put Biff. I
agree.

I must admit I lost interest with Johnny Mac for a while some years back. I
recently listened to The Heart of Things and Time Remembered which are
simply wonderful albums by our John. The former with a band and the latter
mainly solo acoustic with some augmentation by an Italian trio of
acoustimusicians. This one is inspiring for struggling guitar students like
myself. You can actually understand what's happening fairly easily.
BTW it's his variations on Bill Evans numbers.
