South London Radical History Group

South London Radical History Group is a new open forum for people interested in radical history, particularly (but not solely) in South London. Our monthly meetings take place at Use your Loaf, a squatted Social Centre in an old bakery in Deptford High Street. We have already had two successful meetings - one about George Julian Harney, the Deptford-born Chartist, and the other about regeneration/gentrification in post-war Southwark. Forthcoming events include:

Thursday 27 March 2003, 8 pm: Battles for open space in South London

Many commons and parks still exist in South London because local people campaigned, rioted and physically defended them against the enclosures and developers. Discover the hidden history of Richmond Park, Wimbledon Common, Plumstead Common, One Tree Hill and more…

Tuesday 29 April 2003 (note change of date), 8 pm: May Days in South London

Beltane, May Queens, Jack in the Green and the 'Workers' Maypole'

Thursday 29 May 2003, 8 pm: South London Women's Hospital Occupation

A participant recalls this occupation from the mid-1980s

Thursday 26 June 2003: Dan Chatterton walk and talk

An expedition to Clerkenwell to hear about the late 19th century anarchist and editor of 'Chatterton's Commune - the Atheist Communistic Scorcher' (meeting place and times to be confirmed).

Admission free. Venue for all above (except Dan Chatterton walk): Use Your Loaf Social Centre, 227 Deptford High Street, London SE8. 2 minutes from Deptford British Rail station, 5 minutes from Deptford Bridge DLR station.
