My Cats Don't Shed (I Do)

Sewing for Pets and Profit

I don't sew much, but thought I'd pass this tid bit on to ladies--and guys?--in the community who do.

You may or may not know that Air Canada no longer allows small pets to be brought in cabin on flights. What that means to a lot of travellers is that their cats and dogs must go into cargo. (Unless we're lucky enough to have West Jet to take us where we need to go.) Although its "temperature controlled" in cargo, we still worry about our critters--especially those with less fur, like mine--when its cool, wet or windy. The trek to and from the cargo area to the plane is especially worrisome. Further, since 9-11, airlines are gettting sticky about what we put inside of kennels. I used to line the inside of my kennels with glued-on padding/insulation and fabric, but its a no-no now. I guess I could hide plastic explosives in there, if I was determined. My cats get only blankets when we fly. (Plus a foot warmer.) What the airlines are allowing -- so far, anyhow -- are removeable "cozies" for the *outside* of the kennels.

Heck, even just taking pets to the vet in the winter or the rain can be nasty. Try keeping a critter wrapped *inside* a blanket in the kennel. Or try keeping a blanket over a kennel in the wind we get.

I've Googled my fingers off and can only find waterproof/insulated dog crate covers for big hunting dogs. I don't care for camo, but I'd buy one for my cats if I could get a cover that was small enough.

So... if you're looking for a way to make some cash with your sewing machine, let me know. I have a market for you at cat shows and my pet owners. As for dogs, there are probably just as many or even more. I have no idea where you'd get a pattern; you'd probably have to desing your own.
