Those who are taking a conservative approach to this situation are not feeding any products with wheat gluten in them to their pets. Wheat gluten is fairly easy to avoid; most canned "pate-style" foods (not chunks) and dry foods won't have any wheat gluten in them, but corn, soy and rice as thickeners and binders. Do not assume your brand or variety doesn't have wheat gluten if it isn't a "chunks in gravy" style of food; do read the label.
Some people are avoiding wheat gluten for human family members, too, since we have no guarantee that the wheat hasn't made it into the human food supply. As Mom to a child who was gluten-free for five years I know that wheat gluten is very difficult to avoid in prepared people foods. Canned soups and stews are the first place to look for it. The contaminated wheat gluten from china is supposedly a "human-grade" product, not "feed-grade". So this may be a human safety issue, too.
Remember that your elderly neighbours and others who aren't following this online may need your help to know what foods are safe to have in
their homes. Please be a good neighbour and offer to read the online
news and food labels for them.
