ANTS! -- Entry for May 14, 2007
photo

The ant dance has begun. I found an ant in the bed last night. On the weekend, they scurried around my feet as I pulled weeds in the back yard.

If you are concerned about pets and/or kids in an area that needs to be treated for ants, look for a product with the active ingredient of pyrethrins, a chemical made from chrysanthemum flowers. In ag supply shops like UFA and Peavy Mart ,you'll find jugs of pest treatments with pyrethrins for application in barns and on animals.  In garden centres you'll find insecticidal soaps with pyretherins in them. Pet stores carry flea and tick sprays, for using directly on cats and dogs, that include pyretherins, but at lower concentrations. Anyone of them could be sprayed or poured around foundation cracks to discourage the ants from trekking indoors.

Saturday afternoon I used a bottle of Hartz Flea and Tick Spray around the foundation of our house. The ant dance has slowed down considerably.

As for the critter I found in the bed, he got "schmushed".
