Could Someone Explain the Speeches? |
In every episode of Sailor Moon someone gives a speech. Since my first episode, I have been questioning the need for speeches in a battle. Only once or twice has a speech been effective against an enemy to turn them over to the opposite side. I'm not saying they should stop the speeches (they can be rather comical at times, and memorizing them makes you seem like a hard-core fan), but are they really all that necessary? |
Sailor Moon always gives a speech to the rival before turning them into moon dust. Does she expect that by exclaiming who she is, they'll give up? Or is she trying to sway them over to her side? With someone she knows personally, I can understand. For example, in "Day of Destiny," she tries to talk it over with Darien before they hurt each other. That makes sense; she loves him. And in the Rainbow Crystal episodes: she knows the youmas are actually nice people. Why kill a perfectly nice person? |

But what about the real youmas and droids? Why tell them who you are, if you're just going to kill them? It isn't like they can return to Queen Beryl or Prince Diamond and tell them that it was Sailor Moon. They're dead. How could they? I believe that the most time-efficient and constructive way to get rid of them is to just dust 'em and move on. |

Exhibit A: Tuxedo Mask displaying his mind-dulling powers of languistics. |

The only way to justify Sailor Moon's or any other Scouts' speeches is to say they're doing it out of their big hearts. They feel too much compassion to just kill the youma. Even a cardian has the right to know who the deed is being done by. Which brings up another topic: Do the Scouts feel bad after they've killed a youma? My answer is: no. They are proud to have rid the Earth of such a creature. But wouldn't their big hearts be saddended by the thought that they personally ended a life? Apparently not... |

Anyhoo, back to the topic. Like the Scouts, Tuxedo Mask and his sheet-clad counterpart, the Moonlight Knight, also enjoy nagging the youma to death. Yes, I said 'nagging'. Tuxedo Mask seems to have a different take on the speeches. You can hear it both in the tone he uses and words he chooses. He seems to be out to make the youma, or any other equally bad guy, see the wrongs of their ways, yet it seems that even if they had, Tuxie would show no mercy. But maybe that's just me... |

Exhibit B: What happens when you talk too long. Left herself wide open... |

The Moonlight Knight also has the same approach. Both he and Tuxedo Mask also like to give self-esteem boosters to the Scouts more than the Scouts do to each other. The Moonlight Knight more so than Tuxie. But maybe that's just because the Scouts had lower self-esteem (especially Serena) since Darien wasn't there. |

So, in conclusion, I have no conclusion. This has proven to be inconclusive! Speeches are given because one feels the need to give a speech. Everyone handles presure differently. The people in Sailor Moon just seem to think that speeches will help. Hey, whatever works for them... |

Exhibit C: Evidence of the effect of speeches on others. Beware! It rubs off! Ack! |
