So....do I look like someone who would own a Porsche?

Okay, this isn't MY car--but it could be! Look at the pic below:
Yeah, well, I didn't think so either. I'm still trying to figure out what possessed me to buy this car. About a year ago, I started thinking that it might be a good idea to have a 2nd car, given the Jetta is getting up there (180k mi and climbing). I had also been talking a lot with my mechanic, and he seemed to think the 944's were a great car--especially the fairly rare S and S2 models. I started looking around and found that 944's seemed to have 'plateaued' in price, and represented a great deal of car for the money. |

I drove a couple standard 944's and felt they were not quite quick enough. I also knew the Turbo, although amazingly fast for the price (name another car you can buy that can do 170mph for under $11k!), could be a huge maintanence nightmare. |

That left me with the 944S.

The 944S was sold only in model years 1987-88. The 'S' was born of 2 things: one, there was a huge price/performance gap in the 944 range. Almost 70hp and $20+k separated the 944 and 944 Turbo. At the same time, the 928 received DOHC, 4v cylinder heads. Given the 944's 2.5l 4 cylinder was roughly based on 1/2 the 928's V8, the ever-economical Germans adapted the 16v head to the 944 motor, added the Turbo's more sophisticated electronics--and thus the 188hp 944S was born. |
