This interview was done by Nick who runs the label/distro Crimes Against Humanity in the US. The label releases very much heavy crust/metal/grind style bands, like; Accion Mutante,Wartorn,To What End?, Misery, Uncurbed,Homoiratus, Words That Burn, Audio Kollaps, Despite,Agathocles, Disgust, Remains of the Day, Warspite, Asschapel, Wolfpack, Cluster Bomb Unit and more
1. What first prompted you to start a label?
Well I was in a band called Legion of Doom and we were going to do a
split Lp and it fell through so I was like Fuck it. I'll press it onto a
7" myself.
2. What's been you most sold release so far?
So far I'd have to say Wolfpack "Allday Hell" Cd (Approx 4,500), Misery
"early years" Cd (approx 4500) and Disgust "The Horror of it All" Cd /
Lp (Approx 4500) I have some others that are close to that as well but
I think those are the biggest sellers.
3. Did you find it hard finding a manufactoring plant/what plant would
you recommend?
Actually not at all. I used United whenever I do vinyl which is rare.
For cds I have a friend up in Winnipeg and he recomended me to a local
place called Polar Bear Productions and I've been using them for years
now. They are awesome people and have cheap prices. I have recomended
everyone to go through them and now a lot of labels like Profane
Existence, Havoc and many others use them as well.
4. Have you lost money from distro's, shops, traders, credit card fraud
etc Any advice on how to avoid it?
Oh yeah. Well I've been ripped off from traders who never sent their
stuff, I've been ripped off from people I gave music to on consignment,
I've only so far lost $11 in credit card fraud but someone almost got
almost $500 but I caught it 1 day before fed ex was going to deliver it
so I got it back. Of course I have people from Indonesia and Malaysia
trying to order with a stolen credit card number all the time. If I
shipped everytime one of those bastards tried with a stolen card I'd be out
of business. H
How to avoid it. Well be smart first of all. If something seems to good
to be true be wary. Such as a $500 order. Basically it takes experience
to weed out the trash and everyone who sells on the internet will have
to go through these losses because only experience will allow you to
learn.
I'd estimate my losses since I started a label from bad traders and
everything else at $4000. Keep in mind these are punks doing this too.
5. Do you have many old releases gathering dust under your bed?
I'm not sure what you exactly mean by this question but I'll assume you
are talking about upcoming releases. Yeah I have about 6 releases
sitting here waiting to get released. I just need money to do them.
6. What distribution would you recommend for a band/label?
Trading. That's the most important thing. If I didn't trade with other
labels I would have went out of business years ago. Don't give much out
on consignment either. But yeah trade as much as you can.
7. Do you use companies outside the 'd.i.y network' to distribute your
releases to record shops, is it worth it?
Yeah I use places like Century Media, Relapse and some others but I
don't use any distributers such as Caroline or anything like that.
8. Is there any advise you'd like to add for folks planning to
release a piece of vinyl or CD?
Yeah, don't. Unless you want to give your life up to shipping records,
emailing people and going in debt. If you can do that then do it but
running a label takes much more time and patience then most people
realize.
9. What are the next planned releases for the label?
Well out soon are the Mesrine, Accion Mutante, and Diskonto Cds. After
that I'll have cds but Gaurithoth, Phobia / Skrupel Split CdEp,
Hellshock / Effigy Split Cd, Cripple Bastards "Your Lies In Check" Cd,
Insuiciety Cd, Neuron Full Length Cd and more.
Thanks for the interview. NICK
