Hello everyone, I had a few people asking me about how I made my patches so I thought I'd post a how to guide. Ok well for starters let me tell you what not to use.
1. Image transfer paper (expecially the cheap shit you buy at wal mart) this shit cracks as soon as your clothes wrinkle and looks like shit on any fabric but white.
2. Image transfer paper with wax paper pretty much the same problems as listed above, and eventually the wax paper that you ironed down on the transfer will rise and that will look great.
3. White out, now I'm not positive how this works on most fabrics, but on leather it cracks and peels after about a week, anyways this stuff is about the same price as fabric paint which will last ALOT longer...and get this, you can wash it, although this isn't a big issue with most people I know who wear patches.
OK, so now onto the good methods.
1. Fabric paint and freezer paper, before you ask no wax papaer is not the same as freezer paper and this is a tad time consuming so you may want to take my word for it, just fork out the 5.50 for a thing of freezer paper, which will probably last you as long as you make patches for. so here's the down lo
i)draw a design, or print a design off your comp, that you fancy, I recomend nothing too fancy, band logos are good though
ii) cut a peice of freezer paper about 3 cm bigger in diameter then your logo and trace the design (on the paper side)
iii)Get a cutting board, or a phone book and, with an exacto knife, cut out your design (you may have peices you will have to iron down idenpendently later, ie, the hole in the a, the center of an o)
iiii)Make sure your iron is on the highest setting WITHOUT steam, and fully heated then place the stecil of the freezer paper (wax side down) and Iron it good (make sure all the peices are firmly attached to the fabric)
iiiii)take a sponge or paintbrush and apply the paint to the inside of the stencil (try not to get under the freezer paper)
iiiiii) when the paint is dry peel off the freezer paper, and vola, you may have to do some small touchups with a paintbrush in the color of the fabric, but usually this works well.
OK now for num 2.
2. You will need this stuff called Picture this, which is an Opaque Transfer Medium, you can buy at micheals for about $8, and you will need fabric Varnish, or any acrilic waterbase varnish with a satin finish and finally a photocopy of of the image (backwards, take it into paint and change it horizontally) it has to be done with an actual photocopy machine with toner, not inkject, I just go to office depo and get them to do a few for me, costs like .50.
i) Ok cut around the image (as close as you can) and apply a thick coat of picture this (so thick you can see the image) and put it face down on the fabric.
ii) Take a rolling pin and press the picture (medium down) onto the fabic.
iii) Leave it out at least 24 hours
iiii) DO NOT TRY AND PEEL IT OFF, take it to a sink or bucket full of luke warm water and let it sit for about 2 mins
iiiii) Then with a circular motion roll the paper off the image (you may have to do this a couple times, let it dry, re wet it roll off the paper, you can use a blowdryer to speed up drying process)
iiiiii)after the picture is pretty much clear, and dry apply a layer of the varnish and let it dry (try to make it as un blotchy as possible),you may want to do this one more time and let it dry, then your patch should be done, unless you wanted to cut right around it, leaving no fabric showing (which is what I do).
In the end it has a leather texture and is a bit harder it sew through, but will never crack, and again you can wash it.
