JOOLZ This is an interview (1989) with Joolz, who to this day still does all the artwork for New Model Army, she's normally at the t-shirt stall at the gigs. Since this interview, shes been interviewed in alot of tattoo magazines, I also saw in the last while she as an novel. How did you get your record/book deal? Joolz: Just being alive and seeing everything going on around me! I got the book and record deal(now defunct I no longer have a record label) by hard work and brass nerve. I have a new publishers now "Bloodaxe" books and a new book out in april. Are you aware that your signed to a subsidary of the arms dealers, EMI? Yes of course I know but it is naive and shortsighted to imagine that any record company or book publicher, or bank or super market or cigarette manufacturer or shoe shop etc etc etc is any 'better' or 'more pure' than any other. All large sums of money are 'dirty'. So you use it and don't let it use you. Are you a vegetarian, what do you think of the A.L.F. hunt sabs etc? No I am not a vegetarian though I don't eat alot of meat as there are vegetarians living in my house, and we eat communally. I fully support A.L.F and hunt sabs, though my concerns lead me to fight in other areas at present. Do EMI get any money from your book? No EMI never had any connection with my book, and the only place you can get the book is by mail order from frog merchandise the new book should be available in bookshops. Is it hard getting gigs being a poet, have you done any outside the uk? Moderalely difficult-not as easy as if I were a band! The problem is not getting a gig but arranging somewhere suitable to perform, A quiet, intimate venue of about 2/3000 capacity is best-The atmosphere is very important so I am as fussy as I can afford to be about venues, still, I have to make a living, as well, so sometimes things aren't perfect. I have played in Norway, Denmark, Germany, Holland, USA, Poland, Ireland and Canada. All of these more than once and it looks like I shall go back to them all again. Alot of my work is outside the UK. Is it true your also an artist, writer and playwright. What stuff have you done? I am presently writing a novel, I write short stories that have appeared in Canadian 'ARt' magazines and once in 'backstreet heros' biker mag! I've never written a play, though as to artwork, I illustrated my own work and design all of New Model Armies artwork right through record sleeves, t-shirts etc. T sometimes sell my pictures privately too.
