Suburban Rebels
Suburban Rebels were a great Cork punk band, when all the bands were getting into heavy crust styles. The Suburban Rebels didn't change to any style and stuck to their guns, playing straight up punk rock. After they broke up their drummer Morty was in the Sultans Of Ping(who were famous for a while), helped start the Cork Music co-op and did a great zine called Sunny Days and a footie one called No more plastic pitches and as far as I know his now in a band with a fella who used to be in the U.S punk band the Freeze. The rest of them went on to be "The Herbivores", who reminded me a small bit of The Levellers. As far as I know they are still going under a new name. All a very friendly bunch of people, the singer Jack used to be very involved in Irish Council Against Blood Sports, and I met him for many years when I lived in Cork at various protests against hunts around christmas. This interview is from 1991
Ye seem pretty influnced by oi. Whatdo you think of the racism and sexism involved with oi music?
We don't think or have thought there was/is sexism in oi! as concerns racism its involved in some way.

I've no photos of The Rebels, but just of demos, Jack the Suburban Rebels singer is in the crowd!
What do you think of Gary Bushell. Do you think he lost his crdibility when he joined "the sun" or do you think he had any to start with?
We do think he had credibility because his got to be one of the main driving forces behind the oi movement as regards, when he joined the sun of course he
lost his credibility as you could not call the sun a newspaper..
Do you think the Cork Scene has improved of late??
The Cork scene can't improve because its not been published anymore.(ed: smart arse, the cork scene was an old magazine about cork)Seriously though its beginning to pick up. There are lots of bands in the city but venues are a problem amongst other hassles. Unfortunately the rave scene is teh happening thing at the moment. Emigration killed the gig scene because alot of the gig goers fucked off to London and perhaps up to half the crowd was lost because of this. The punk scene in Cork is bigger than ever so thats nice to see.
How hard is it getting a gig in Cork, What sort of a crowd do you find, you get in of late?
There are no good venues in Cork in which to have a good gig and to have punks, skins etc. inthe doormaybe 1 or 2, but they only have gigs maybe a couple times a year.
What was your worst moment as Band?
When we had no singer in the band and Timmy had to sing
In Canada they experiment on monkeys in search of a cure for AIDS. Do you think the pro's otweight the con's?: What is your view on vivisection and animal rights in general?
We think all animals should be able to live in harmony with nature and not be exploited by man. Most experimants on animals are unnesscessary and inflict pain and suffering which is uncalled for
What do you think of bands who start on a small label and sell their albums etc for minimum profit and then when they join a larger company they up the prices of albums and gigs etc?
Most bands you are on about join companies to get themselves known and their records sold. They do not have much of a say in the prices of their records and gigs.

Another demo against the hunt in Carrigline, Cork
Any last words?
Sorry for the delay and all the best.
