Violent Phobia were Corks first crust band, I reckon. Big influences being Doom, E.N.T, Ripcord and Conflict. Formed in 1989, they're first gig was at a traveller site in west cork as far as I remember. But I first saw them, at their second gig at a benifit for Irish Council Against Blood Sports in Sir Henrys, and thought they were great. It was shortly after this interview I ended up playing guitar with them, there was never an offial break up of the band, it just kind of faded off. This interview was done in 1990 by the bass player Sandy and singer Mark Troll.
Protest: For people who have not heard of your music, how would you describe it?
Fast in parts, slow in parts, noisey, energetic melodic in parts,
fuck it I don't know. Its hard for me to say 'cos I hear the songs to often I don't really listen
more if you know what I mean. I mean its hardcore punk, but we would like to think it appeals to
people into all differant styles of hardcore. I think somebody not involved in the band could describe our music better.
What do you think of green anarchism? If you do agree with it, how would we deal with murderers, rapist's etc?
To me green anarchism is a blueprint for an ideal soceity. For that reason it naturally appeals to me, in that sense I suppose I am
an anarchist(ain't I radical). However because man isn't perfect it isn't possible to have a perfect world. That isn't to say that you can't have a better world. I don't
think people realise that. They see alternatives to the system we have and immeaditly say "man couldn't work, man isn't good enough" and sit on their arses and accept what they have.
Every system has its flaws, no matter what system you live in, there will always be wrongs and imperfections. I think you must ask yourself in which system would there be more good. Now look
at our society, does good outweight bad? Just because a theory isn't perfect it doesn't mean you ignore it, you combine it with others and create something new.
As for rapists etc... I can't think of any way of eliminating these crimes, maybe teaching people to respect the opposite sex would be a step in the right direction. I mean for fucks sake its 1991,
the majourity of schools are still muscled and there is huge debate about the legal age for condoms. This stupidity can only lead to tnsions between sexes when in fact anybody who tells you that
they know how the ideal system is to be run is speaking shit. The questions can only be answered as time gets on and we learn from our mistakes.
What do you think of all your gigs so far, best/worst?
Worst gig had to be charlies in Dublin with Blue Babies, Paranoid Visions and Cuinas last jan. Tammy was rushed to hospital the night before so we had only had
one singer who only knew half the words, the lead guitar kept falling out of Padge's guiatr, I couldn't play a note 'cos of Steve C.'s generosity but Don was as great as ever. Best... well we are
yet to play a good gig.
Anymore more to say Tin Tin?
If anyone is desperate enough to want a tape of the second gig, please send £8.99, five tapes a s.a.e and allow 28 months for delivery(don't forget the key to your mothers bedroom, gnuff gnuff gnuff gnuff, gnarf, gnarf).
above is the cover of the demo, "No excuse", and a photo of Don (drummer) and Tammy(singer) at a candlelight vigil in Cork, marking the first anniversary of the Gulf War.
