Powell River Power Squadron
Jan 24, 2001
Those presents:
Carl Floe, Dave Fisher, Hebert, Ron Hadwick, Jim Curtin and Jeff Mah
Result of marks from last year's exams is high.
Need to set date for graduation ceremony. Where? Westview Pizza, Snickers? When? Sometime in March when the certificates will be received. Would be nice to have a presentation to go along with the graduation ceremony as well. The last time we had David Dyck doing a slide presentation of trip to Alaska.
Other Power Squadrons tend to provide more acitivities - e.g. flare demonstration down on the beach with involvement from the Coast Guard. Another is a class on outboard maintenance from a guest speaker. Dan Light's name is suggested. More ideas? Jeff suggested a flare-off at Willingdon Beach on Canada Day before the fireworks
Harold Tombs (district training officer) spoke to Carl about the fact that the teachers are paid to do the Boar-Pro course by the school district, perhaps the PRPS can contact the school board about having them becoming the provider for teaching the course with the blessing from PRPS. Things are working well now so we will consider that when the need arises.
AGM - coming up in May along with the graduation ceremony.
Finance - in good shape. Vests were given to the instructors and quite well received. Next item is donation to the Coast Guard. Carl talked to Ralph Aston, Andy Infinti but has not been contacted about needed items. Have purchased a set of 30 books on Radio course which will be reusable by students. Free course has been offered by Ralph to the members of PRPS. Hebert has a concern about Ralph being a private person and receiving the books for free. Jeff Mah moved that the issue not to be carried through and Dave Fisher seconded.
Additional items helpful for PRPS: more instructors manuals and training manual. Go ahead been OK for purchase.
Boat-Pro course: Jim suggested that he would hold the challenge exams once a month Feb, March, May and June and none in the summertime. He would advertise the exams in the newspaper.
Dave suggested that he could hold a BBQ at his place in the summer, perhaps July 1st to take place along with the flare-off.
Next meeting before the AGM and graduation ceremony.
