After you have finished all of the breast cancer treatment, and completed a battery of tests to make sure that there is no cancer left in your body you are declared cancer free and officially become a breast cancer survivor. Unfortunately, breast cancer or any other cancer for that matter is not like many other diseases. With many other diseases once you're cured, the disease will never return and it's not something that you need to worry about or be concerned about ever again in the future. The term that is used for cancer is that you are in remission which really means that the cancer can come back at some future time, but not always. Some people go on to live quite normal long lives and never have any signs of cancer returning every again.
The common denominator among cancer survivors, is that every new symptom that comes along is something to be concerned about and could possibly be a symptom of cancer. Quite often this means a new round of tests to confirm that there is no cancer in your body. One of the significant concerns that my wife Carol has as well as many other breast-cancer survivors is the lack of energy that they have after they have completed all of their treatment and the length of time that this lack of energy situation continues. In the back of her mind, she is always wondering if this is a symptom of cancer somewhere else in her body. Fortunately we read an article in the Ottawa Sun, on January 10, 2006 which laid to rest this particular concern. I wanted to pass it along on this web site.
Quote from Ottawa Sun, Tuesday, January 10, 2006.
Breast-cancer Survivors Tired
"A third of breast-cancer survivors suffer from fatigue for up to 10 years after their initial diagnosis, according to a UCLA study published yesterday. According to the study, published in the online edition of Cancer, the Journal of the American Cancer Society, approximately 34% of the 763 cancer patients surveyed reported significant fatigue at five to 10 years post-diagnosis. Of those surveyed, 21% reported fatigue at both one to five years post-diagnosis and five to 10 years."
It appears from this study, that being tired after completing all of your treatment for breast cancer is a normal phone is something that each breast cancer survivor must learn to deal with, and it should not be a concern about cancer coming back in some other part of the body.
