Signs of Breast Cancer
Imagine you have no signs of cancer in your breast, you have no cancer anywhere in the family, you eat well, don't smoke and only drink moderately. Why should you worry about breast cancer? Many thousands of women every year are being diagnosed with breast cancer and many will die because they waited too long to do something about it.If you have any kind of abnormal swelling or lumps in your breast, see a doctor immediately. Do not wait. It may save your life!
My wife fits the description above. She was very good at going for a mammogram every two years and there were no symptoms at all. Then she gets a call back after one of the routine mammograms to come back for a second more detailed assessment. The stress level has sky rocketed, even though she has no symptoms. Turns out she has a cancer growth about 1.7 cm's in size deep in the breast. Even though the doctors knew were it was using the mammogram as a guide, they still could not feel it when they examined her. This is why is so important to have a regular mammogram completed.
She was immediately scheduled for a biopsy (immediate in Canada means 3 weeks later and then another week to hear about the results). Again, thanks to alert nurses and doctors, they noticed swelling in her lymph nodes. A biopsy was done at the same time and confirmed it had spread to her lymph nodes! Remember there was no signs at all in my wife's case.
Many more tests were completed to confirm that the cancer had only spread to the lymph nodes in my wife's case, however the scheduling of tests and waiting for results is very unnerving. From the time we first found out that she had cancer until we had all of the test results back and the results of the surgery was 3 months of elapsed time. Many sleepless nights were spent wondering were it had spread. Fortunately it had gone no further than the lymph nodes which is still quite serious.
