There are many kinds of breast cancer and the breast cancer treatment will be different for every person, almost tailor made. You need to listen to your doctor very closely to properly understand the options you have. Unfortunately when you are emotionally in a turmoil, you need to make some very important decisions that will have a profound impact on your life. Having someone go with you to write all this down is a very good thing, so that you can refer to notes later.
Some women, opt to have their breast removed while others will only have the lump removed. Depending on the stage of cancer that you have, you may also need to have chemotherapy treatment as well as radiation treatment. Each of these treatments are different and tailored to the kind of breast cancer that you have. In my wife's case she opted to have the lump removed, which meant that she needed to have six chemo treatments and 25 radiation treatments. Some women have no choice, the breast must come off.
The surgery even for a lump removal can be quite invasive depending on were the lump is. In her case it was deep, which meant a two day stay in the hospital and a week of recovery at home before the tubes and bandages are all removed. The chemo was administered at three week intervals and is scheduled each time depending on the condition of blood counts which are monitored very closely.
Once radiation began, it is a bit of an ordeal. The actual treatment is not too bad, however it does mean a trip to the cancer clinic every day except for holidays and weekends for twenty five days. Not everyone will have radiation treatment and not everyone who has radiation will have 25 treatments. This will be tailored to your situation. This gets more than a bit tedious. Then there are more tests to confirm that the treatments did what they were supposed to do, which is another anxious bit of time to wait. In our case everything is fine, for now.
