Well folks, I'm back! I know I haven't written anything here for a very long time, and to be honest with you, I just haven't felt like writing because I didn't think anything was worthy of my acid tongue (haha). But there is a topic I wish to discuss that has been bothering me for many years. It has to do with the coverage that the soap opera magazines give to the shows we love to watch.
Ever since I was a fan of Sunset Beach, I noticed that the various soap mags never gave that show enough coverage within their pages. I may have written about this back when I was apart of the website Sunset Central. Now that I run my own website for Passions, I took it upon myself to compile a list of all the cover stories for the various publications on soap operas. Let me tell you, it was enlightening to say the least.
We all know that there are 2 major magazines that cover the soaps on television today. I kept a track of every soap that received the cover on these magazines with their feature story inside. What I came to find out is that you don't have to be the best rated show on television, but quite possible the most popular. Below is a listing of all the shows and the number of times they were given the cover on Soap Opera Digest (SOD) and Soap Opera Weekly (SOW) for the year 2002. See how your show stacked up.
As you can see, shows like Port Charles (PC) didn't receive even one single cover on either magazine, while shows like Days Of Our Lives (DOOL) racked up the covers for both magazines. Is there favoritism going on here? DOOL had a cover at least twice a month, yet our favorite show Passions, received only 3 little covers for the entire year. At one point during 2002, DOOL received 4-5 covers for the same major storyline.
Now I am not saying that Passions is better than DOOL, because it is now. I watch DOOL as well and I admit that it is a much better show. And look at the covers that Y&R received, they are the top rated show in daytime and have been for many years, yet they received only half of the covers that DOOL received. What is the point of having publications geared towards these daytime soap operas if you are not going to be fair and even in your coverage? Is something going on at these magazines that we don't know about?
All I ask is that all the shows are treated equally and given the same about of print space within these publications. I hope that the powers that be at Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly read this and take notice. I will be keeping track this year again and post another article like this next year.
So, stay tuned and check back next time for another View From The Hill.
