Emails concerning suitability of Fiddler Crabs in the home aquarium

March 5th, 2000

Just thought i would write and let you know that I found your aquaria page very informative and well presented. I was reading the information you had about owning fiddler crabs:

I have a fiddler that I bought from a fish store in July of 99. 7 months later he is still alive and growing. He likes eating shrimp pellets, and hogs em up gathering and guarding as many as he can, protecting them from being eaten by the fish. I add a little iodine free salt to the tank...just a safe and healty amount for any freshwater community.

He seems to be living just fine. Seems to be pretty happy for a crab. He does like to occasionally crawl up the outside filter and sit on top of the tank (i guess to get some fresh air), but always goes back into the water.

Just thought I would let you know my experience with owning a pet fiddler...

Oh, i read that if crabs are in a suitable/comfortable environment they will shed regularly. I'm not sure how often is regularly, but my fiddler has shed at least 4 times that I know of. he has grown quite a bit larger than he was when I got him, especially his big claw.

maybe my fiddler is the exception and not the rule, but he is very easy to manage and care for, plus very entertaining (like when he climbs on top of his caves and waves his claw back and forth threatening any fish that get near him and his home).
