CHRIS: Grandpa, do you know what the 2nd Beatitude is?
G-PA: Yes. "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted"
CHRIS: Yes, that is the one we were talking about in Sunday School.
G-PA: Is there anything you don't understand, Chris?
CHRIS: Does that mean it's good if somebody dies or something terrible happens to make us cry?
G-PA: No. I think the mourning referred to here means mourning over sin.
CHRIS: Mourning over sin?!!
G-PA: That's right. To mourn is to have a deep concern to the point of doing something.
CHRIS: You mean like the time you were in Italy during World War Two?
G-PA: I'm surprised you remember that. They were killing people like me and I had to hide in a garbage truck so they didn't see me.
CHRIS: That was terrible.
G-PA: It sure was. But some didn't care enough to try to get away and they were killed.
CHRIS: You mean they could have gotten away and didn't?
G-PA: You're right about that.
CHRIS: I know some kids who are like that about heaven. They know they need to be saved, but they just don't care enough to do anything about it. I guess they don't mourn -- right, Grandpa?
G-PA: That's right. And if they don't mourn, they will never know the comfort salvation brings!
CHRIS: I could not make it if I didn't have the Lord's salvation.
G-PA: And neither could I. There are also Christians who know of sin in their lives. They too, need to mourn, or repent, and then they'll find the comfort of the full forgiveness that God has promised.
CHRIS: How about you boys and girls. Do you care enough to seek God's salvation? See you later.
G-PA: Bye boys and girls. See everybody later.
