Tolkien References
in Alucard's Inventory
Have you ever looked through Alucard's extensive
inventory and wondered where in hell they got all that stuff?? Well, this
page covers some of those rare items hanging around the castle waiting
to be picked up. Yes indeed, there's a LOT of things borrowed from J.R.R.
Tolkien's mythology.
If you're a Castlevania: SotN and/or a Tolkien fan,
you might appreciate this. There are SPOILERS (for The Silmarillion
anyway); you have been forewarned. I don't know what's more scary, the
fact that I noticed the peculiarity of these items, or the time I spent
researching and compiling this page. Enjoy!
This is how it goes:
Name of Item |
Given Description in SotN |
Statistics/Effects |
From Tolkien's Mythology.
. . |
Weapons:
Crissaegrim |
Countless blades dice enemy |
Attack: 36; Defense: 1 |
Mountains south of Gondolin,
the hidden city ruled by Turgon (a Noldorin Elf king), son of Fingolfin. |
Fist of Tulkas |
Blessed by Tulkas the Valar |
Attack: 39; Defense 5; Special:
Fireball (D, DF, F +Attack) or Punch (B, F +Attack) |
Tulkas the Strong, one of
the Powers of Eä; a Valar is equivalent to an angel of a particular
order in Tolkien's mythology. |
Glamdring (Dark Blade) |
Sword forged by elves |
Attack: 35; Defense: 2 |
Gandalf's sword; discovered
-along with Orcrist- by Bilbo and the Dwarves in a troll cave as related
in The Hobbit. See also: Orcrist. |
Gurthang |
Gets stronger when bloodied |
Attack: 25; Defense 1; Special:
Blood Drain (D, DF, F +Attack) |
Originally named Anglachel;
forged by the Dark Elf, Eöl; a dangerous sword wielded by Túrin
Turambar who named it Gurthang (meaning Iron of Death). The blade turned
black after he accidentally slew his friend, Beleg the elf, with it. |
Icebrand |
Ice sword of Mim |
Attack: 25; Special: Ice
Blast (D, DF, F +Attack) |
As far as I know this has
nothing to do with the sword, but there is a Dwarf named Mîm mentioned
in The Silmarillion. Forced by Morgoth's orcs to betray Túrin;
Mîm hates the Grey-elves for hunting his tribe to extinction and
attempts to murder Beleg with Anglachel (Gurthang). |
Mablung Sword |
Spirit sword, improves Defense |
Attack: 39; Defense: 2 |
Mablung, an elf of Doriath,
chief Captain of King Thingol Greycloak. Mablung's name translates to "of the Heavy Hand." |
Mormegil |
Black sword, Strong vs. Holy |
Attack: 25 |
Yet again, a reference associated
with Túrin, the Master of Doom: Mormegil is the pseudonym he adopted
(meaning Black Sword) while in Nargothrond. |
Orcrist (Luminus) |
Sword forged by elves |
Attack: 26 |
The counterpart of Glamdring;
found by Thorin's company in a troll cave as related in The Hobbit. Thorin's
sword. See also: Glamdring. |
Sword of Hador |
House of Hador heirloom |
Attack: 24 |
House of Hador the Golden-haired;
One of the three tribes of Men that came into Beleriand. They allied themselves
with Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor in Beleriand, and became the hardiest
warrior race of men while aiding the elves against Morgoth, the Enemy. |
Headgear:
Dragon Helm |
Frightens enemy, lowers DEF |
Strength +4; Attack +4;
Defense +3 |
An ancient heirloom of the
House of Hador, the Dragon-helm was bequeathed to Túrin Turambar. |
Accessories:
Nauglamir |
Dwarven necklace Defense +15 |
Defense +15 |
A necklace of many jewels,
the Nauglamir was a gift from the Dwarves who carved out Nargothrond to
their employer, Finrod Felagund. Later, found by Húrin after the
ruin of Nargothrond in Glaurung's hoard. He "gives" it to Thingol
who in turn has the Silmaril, Lúthien's bride-price, set in the
necklace. The Nogrod dwarves betray the King, and after the fall of Doriath
take the Silmaril with them. Beren launches an attack against them and
regains the Nauglamir with the Silmaril and gives it to Lúthien. |
Ring of Feanor |
Increases overall strength |
Strength +7; Constitution
+7; Intelligence +7; Luck +2; Attack +8; Defense +4 |
Fëanor is the greatest
and worst elf there ever was. Since he was most gifted of the Elves, it’s
no wonder this accessory boosts the stats so significantly.
A genius with the greatest skill in craftsmanship of all the Noldor
(indeed, of all the elves), he created the 3 legendary jewels, the Silmarils.
As told in The Silmarillion, his brilliance was matched later by
his pride, greed, and selfishness, perhaps due to Morgoth's influence.
After Morgoth stole the Silmarils, Fëanor convinced the Noldor elves
to rebel against the Valar and make a disastrous journey to Middle-Earth.
Because of his deeds, a doom was placed on the all of the Noldor, but it
especially affected him and his sons in their hopeless quest to retrieve
the Silmarils.
(Nope, Fëanor was not known for special rings, although he did
create an alphabetic script that later became common to some languages
in Middle-Earth. He also made the palantíri seen in The Lord
of the Rings, but it was his grandson, Celebrimbor, that made the Rings
of Power....) |
Ring of Varda |
Golden ring to rule over all! |
Strength +30; Constitution
+10; Intelligence +20; Luck +5; Attack +40; Defense +14 |
Yeah right. Oh well, I guess
from the perspective of watching Alucard's stats increase phenomenally...
Varda is one of the Valar and is most revered by Elves since she makes
the stars; Occasionally referred to as Elbereth. This doesn't have anything
to do with Sauron's One Ring, though. |
For more information, either go read Tolkien's books
(The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, or The Silmarillion), or go
play Castlevania: SotN (for the PlayStation, by Konami).
