Xenogears is a role-playing video
game for the first PlayStation console system. It was originally
released in 1998 by SquareSoft and enjoyed a brief re-release in
2001(?). Considered controversial by some because of its heavy play
on the major monotheistic religions and obvious references to the
Bible, the game nonetheless earned cult status among fans. Subject
matter aside, it remains one of the best RPGs of its generation,
not least because of its animation sequences (both in classical
and 3D styles), innovative combination battle system, and engaging,
fully developed storyline and characters.
Name: Krelian
Age: approximately 535 at the present setting of the game (physically:
>35 nanomachine enhanced)
Gear: Amphysvena(?)
Anima Relic Alignment: Judah
Weapon: Broadsword (?)
Without giving away too much of the game, here is the long and
the short of it: Krelian is one of the most important characters
of the game if only because most of the events, whether directly
or indirectly, are caused by him and his goal to ressurect a planetary
scale biological entity. Introduced part way through the game as
the mastermind behind the workings of an advanced civilization,
Krelian is also a scientist whose expertise is nanotechnology and
is the eptiome of science without regard to human life. We learn,
however, that it's all a means to an end, a relentless path which
began five centuries earlier backed by a story of unrequited love
and ignited by the death of the woman he adored...

Interesting Fact: Due to translation error of the Japanese
katakana syllables (ka.re.ru.ren), Krelian's name is "Krelian"
in the English version of Xenogears, but was supposed to be "Karellen,"
a name originally penned by renowned science fiction author Arthur
C. Clarke (2001: A Space Odyssey) in his short story Guardian
Angel. The author later extended the short story into a full-length
novel entitled Childhood's End. After reading the novel and
considering the game, the character designers took, besides the
name, some obvious character cues from the Karellen in the book.
