News From Monta

I’ll try to put my “good intentions” into reality this time with a newsletter. I stay in bed a lot. I take Gretchen and some of the cats for 2 to 3 walks a day in nice weather. Therefore, we get a little exercise, but I’m ready to lay back down when I come in.

I thought my back was improving with the Methotrexate; the Rheumatoid Arthritis shots but now seem worse. I will call the doctor next week and try to get things moving in the right direction. I’ve been sewing and quilt tops and if my hands will let me, I crochet or embroidery(x-stitch mainly). It’s all slow going, but it’s something. A friend at the thrift store called the other day to tell me about some desks they just got in. I bought the biggest one. The desk is 42 inches wide and a tad over 6 feet long. Now I have something big enough to cut fabric on. Pete was with me. We decided it could stand to be taller so I wouldn’t have to bend. We (or He) ended up putting heavy duty rollers on it. Raising it 4 inches. Just right. I am absolutely so blessed. I had the crud last week. Pete didn’t let his shirt tail hit his back until he was here with the chicken soup. He stayed a week or so. A couple of guys from the church and their sons came last Saturday and cleaned up the back yard. Most of the leaves were too damp to mulch so they left them raked into piles. Pete went out later and mulched them with the lawn mower.

One of my neighbors has been coming over every day to check on me and spends several hours a week deep cleaning. People from the church call and visit frequently. And that is just the beginning.

Merry Christmas everyone.
I love you!

Virginia’s Family

All members in my family are doing well. Barbara volunteers every Monday morning at T J's school and stays and has lunch with him. Dennis was busy in the late summer and early fall helping to install special doors on potato cellars. Lately he has been working on a new front porch at home and having a new driveway installed. Also, he is organizing and building on an addition to his shop.

Roger has a busy flying schedule to Frankfurt, Germany and an occasional trip to London. He and friends are coming again this year to snow mobile in Yellowstone Park during the Christmas holidays. We are always glad to have them here and we have some good times together.

Shannon, Kenneth, T J and Jordyn are fine. Shannon really likes her new job at American Title Co. Kenneth is such a dedicated, hard working employee and is very much appreciated-ed by his employer. He also helps his Dad occasionally on the ranch. T J is in 1st grade and is in the top 5% of his class. He was 7 on November 25th. Jordyn is 3-1/2 and is enrolled with the 4 year olds in pre-school. Both are just adorable.

We had beautiful fall weather, very helpful for harvesting crops. The potato crop produced very well according to the number of semi-truck loads that passed by my house for several weeks. We haven't had much snow yet, but lots of dark, dreary days with quite a bit of rain.

Happy Holidays to all.
Love,
Virginia

Elmeda's Family

I thought Southern California was supposed to be warm and sunny year round? Winter is starting to set in here and the rainy season is in full swing. So far it is one of the wettest years on record along with the coldest. Our coldest so far is 28* on Pendleton where I'm stationed which is VERY extreme.

I returned from Iraq back in Mid-October and we've had our hands full of taking care of repairing weaponry and equipment which is just about wore-out, which was new before we arrived in Fallujah on March 1. Right now it is up in the air whether I will return to Iraq to do a third combat tour, the answer changes day to day, and with more and more fresh inexperienced new guys filling the ranks where the seasoned vets once were who are now out, the answer is looking grim.

A little about was has gone on the previous year with me, as I was deployed to Iraq in the dawn of the year, we relieved the Army's 1/505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne in Fallujah. My platoon was assigned as a CAP (Combined Action Platoon) role, to train the ICDC/ING and Iraqi Police. The CAP role was disbanded in 1974 by the Marine Corps and wasn't used again till now. We lived, worked, slept, and fought side by side with the Iraqis and worked very closely with their Special Forces who were being trained by our Special Forces guys. Our role was to support and train the ICDC/ING and Iraqi Police of a small farming community of about 2,500 people out side of Fallujah to the west with our backs to the Euphrates River. We had a lot of close calls, and lost several people all who were the type of the person you're honored to meet just once in a lifetime. But still we came thru with what had to be done. I think it's a shame that the media of this country CANNOT REPORT WHAT IS TRUTHFULLY BEING DONE IN THAT COUNTRY. From March 19, 2003 at 03:17 to when I arrived the second time on March 1, 2004 I did not recognize the country when I came back due to the economic progress the country had made. We've done a lot of good there, and more people in the country really appreciate us doing what we do, and being there more than what is reported.

Since I've been back Ashly moved out here and her job searching is looking great so far. We're currently living in Oceanside, a community on the southern side of base. Not too far from the beach though which is barely a mile or a little more away.

Right now Ashly and I are excited to drive home for the holidays to see everybody and stay till about New Years before having to come back and go back to work. We hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year's.

News from Oklahoma City

We are thankful that John and Ashly made it to Oklahoma City for Christmas. They are looking forward to visiting with family and friends.

Rachel is finishing her semester tests before taking off for Christmas break. She is a junior at a local Catholic High School. It sure makes it more convenient now that she has her own car and drives herself to and from school. She lettered in Cross-Country Track this fall. I am not sure that I could have done that when I was her age. She is probably building up her endurance for when she starts chasing boys.

John arrived back in California in October (see John’s letter). We went out and visited a few days. There is never enough time or money to see everything and visit the places that you have only read about. We did go to Long Beach and toured the Queen Mary.

Carol and I are still doing okay. Carol stays running, caring for her 105 year old aunt that is in an assisted living center.

Elmeda and Jessie are still neighbors. A large fence hasn’t been necessary.

Elmeda is still spending many hours making bonnets and lap quilts for those going through chemo.
