Watts Meet, Take 2

Once again the family of Watts met at the Wheeler City Park in Wheeler Texas the second Saturday in June (June 13th). This go around there were forty eight present. At least that was the count that I came up with. Did anyone else get a different head count? Let me know if you did & I will run a correction.

I thought I was a little early as there were only a few people when I got there. However, when I downed my last swallow of coffee I started looking around hopelessly for another cup and was pleasantly surprised to find a pot brewing in the same corner of the Pavilion it was in last year.

We missed seeing Virginia & TJ Patterson. Virginia was the only one missing of the surviving brothers & sisters. Elmeda & Warren, Ed, Garland "Pete", Kenneth "Dale", & Monta showed up along with a few sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, and what's this I hear about great grand-children?

Like a poor reporter, I didn't take any notes this time and have a lousy memory. Guess I got that trait called procrastination typical of the Watts family. I did get a proper caption for Cousins by the Dozens in the last issue and will be running it again. Thanks to those who got me lined out.

As usual we had great food which one by one the grandkids pleaded their case with their respective parents "I'm hungry!" and Levi finally got us all started. Dad "Pete" tells me he had planned a Roast for us, but as it was taking forever to cook, he decided to cut it up into bite size pieces and barbecue it. There was plenty to go around, even for those who showed up late.

Once the grandkids were filled, they had swimming on their minds. I told Levi he needed to let his stomach settle before getting wet and after what seemed another eternity to him, finally let him go.

A meeting was held at 3:00 pm, old news reviewed, new news gone over, well you were there. I'm taking on, as you can see, another year of editing "Watts News". Keep those stories coming and thanks for the hundred dollars!

Your family Scribe,
Roy A. Watts

Second Time Around

Bobby, "Petes" number one son, informed the clan of re-marrying his first wife Sharon Mapes. The date for their re-union is the 27th of July, a monday, at 6:00 pm, 1111 Elmhurst (First Foursquare Church) in Salina Kansas. Sharon & Bobby, I am told, now have two grandchildren with another one on the way. Congratulations you two!

Mission, Taiwain

Gailia Marie & Brandt Smith are making plans to become Missionaries in Taiwain. I heard the comment that there some saving needing done over there. Don't forget your next door neighbor & I don't mean because he won't give you the time of day. There are a lot of people out their that have been blinded to the truth, trying to live a life pleasing to the Lord. Be in prayer for Brandt & Gailia & all our missionaries around the world.

Civil Engineer

In pursuit of a better life for my family (Cindy & Levi) and I, I set out to earn a degree in Civil Engineering. When I was first Honorably Discharged from the Navy, I had the GI Bill available for furthering my education but I didn't have a goal set.

December 31, 1989 was the deadline for using the old GI Bill and I was still undecided when that date rolled around. Then in early 1990 I finally made up my mind on Civil Engineering and the Veterans Affairs offered me Chapter 31 benefits which turned out to be better than the old GI Bill.

I chose to go to CSU in Fort Collins, CO, applied and was turned down admission (they wanted to see college level work, sort of a catch 22 situation). USC accepted me into their pre-engineering program and after two years I lacked one course completing it. I reapplied to CSU and they accepted 72 of the 78 credits I had earned at USC with a grade point average of 3.013 on a 4 point scale.

A Civil Engineer is a link between the public and private sectors. There are six major subdivisions: structural, hydraulic, environmental (sanitary), geotechnical, transportation and construction. I haven't settled on one of these yet, but I'm leaning towards transportation.

Presently, during my summer transition between USC in Pueblo and CSU in Fort Collins, I'm working for the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps is like a think tank. I used to think only Civil Engineers worked there but now know that there are a variety of Engineers. Projects involve designing buildings, cleanup strategies of toxic waste, planning dams with reservoirs, all of which gets contracted out.

My duties, so far, at the Corps have been mail clerk, filing, data entry, telefax and answering the phone. I have had the opportunity to sit in on a preconstruction conference which allowed me to experience the process an engineer develops when getting a project started.

That's one of many projects the Corp of Engineers have going. Some projects are short lived ( doesn't take that long to complete) others are still going after five and six years. Any questions or comments are welcome. My address is at the top of page 17. Please note the change of address.

Great Grandkids

I am wanting to run an article about the great grandchildren of Richard Albert Jr. and Anna Mae (Hart) Watts. I've taken a picture or two of those present at the second reunion (with my dad's camera) and look forward to getting a copy when dad gets the film developed (hint hint).

I've wrote an article on Levi and I trust you all enjoyed it. Please consider sending information on these kids be it one, a few or all if you know them all! Topics could include their likes and dislikes, pets, anything they might like reading about themselves ten years down the line.

Also, suggestions for a catchy title would be appreciated. I've put together an index and would like to keep titles individualized, ie no two titles alike. Any and all input (criticism too) are welcome.

Thanks
Roy A. Watts

Cousins Photo

In last quarters issue of Watts News, "Cousins by the Dozens" on page 16 had unidentified people. Now that I have the proper caption, I am running the photo-graph again. From left to right, front row (squatting down) we have Jessie Ann, Nancy, Dale Finsterwald (Amy's ex). Second row, Linda, Karen, Sharon, Jeannie, Barbara Kaye, Randal, Ritchie, Carol (Mink), Shelly, Don Campbell. Third row, Curt, Bruce, Ron, Lowell, Lloyd, Roger, Danny, Jerry Bob, Louis and Pamela (PJ).

Watts Found!

In the Winter issue, page 10 Dale wrote an article titled "Watts Missing". The last son to get married not having the old man's blessing turns out to be none other than our ancestor. I don't remember who it was that made this discovery but this "World book of Watts" that I ordered through dad should shed some light on this subject.

So, instead of missing two brothers, we are now missing three. Given the book and the time to research that book I'll write another article pertaining to these lost tribes of Watts. Hmmm... that looks like a good title. Be watching for it in future issues!
