Monta's Report

Ed's health problems has kept me busy this summer. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia. Multiple strokes are the origin of his non-reversible, progressive brain cell destruction. Effects of different medications has to be monitored, altered and changed to meet his changing needs due to this continual deterioration.

Sometimes a pill that does so much good, suddenly stops being effective. Also, undesirable side affects may occur within a few hours of taking a new medication, or may not show up for several days. It is sometimes a trial and error effort.

The VA Medical Center has been a blessing through it all. Counseling services are only a phone call away and no question is too unimportant or stupid. They have helped me understand a lot.

Richie, Nancy, Randal, Linda and Curt were all here to help Ed celebrate his 69th birthday. His birthday was August 5th and we celebrated it on Saturday August 6th. We cooked hamburgers on the outdoor grill and had cake and homemade ice cream. I think everyone enjoyed themselves. I know I did. Linda and Curt will be grandparents, again, twice next year. Stephanie and Herb are expecting their first child in January. It will be the third one for Donna and Sam, in March. Linda and Curt are as excited as the parents- to-be. And so the family grows.

Groom school has started again, and that means Nancy is back at work, full time. Technically, she had a summer vacation, however, there are so many functions she was required to attend, a day or two here and there, plus a week of schooling, that it pretty well occupied her entire summer.

I understand that Dale is looking forward to retiring - again - in a couple of years. I surely wish he wouldn't be in such a big hurry, because as time speeds toward that eventful day, it also drags me along, and I am not ready for that! Oh, well, I have always been at the mercy of my older brothers, so why should it change now? Being the baby of the family is not always as easy as some people assume. I must admit, it does have it's redeeming factors.

Pete had thought about semi-retiring this Spring, but, after reviewing the whole scope of options, he decided his loses would exceed his gains, so he changed his mind. He has a fairly steady cliental and there doesn't seem to be an over abundance of Pumpers in the (Pampa) area. EPA mandates probably intimidates and discourages many would be Pumpers.

I surely hope the Elder's had a wonderful trip to Idaho. I am looking forward to hearing all about it in the next newsletter.

Love,
Monta

Summer Wedding

On July 31, 1994 at the Bethlehem Premitive Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Lloyd Elder married Janet Beck. Janet was escorted down the aisle by her son and daughter.

Attendants to the occasion included Vicki, Christi, Katie and Rachel Elder. Ben Elder was the Ring bearer. John Elder helped at the reception.

Puzzle Solving Techniques

Laddergrams
As I was thumbing through past issues of "Watts News," I discovered the puzzle on page 35 did not come with sufficient detailed instructions. Sorry about that. Did anyone solve it? 'Solutions' on page 38 gave the answer to the puzzle but it doesn't explain how the puzzle gets solved.

Each three word group has a unique relationship. The first word minus a letter has the same letters as the second word only in a different order. Likewise with the third word with the second.

The answer to {1 Row of color} is STRIPE. Dropping the R and rearranging the letters, SPITE fits {2 Malevolence}. Without the P {3 On location} is SITE. Ok, that one didn't need the letters rearranged. The letters R & P that were dropped are then placed into the left and right columns respectively.

In the next row, to continue this example, SOILED is the word I was looking for, for {4 Got dirty}. {5 Slip} is another word for SLIDE or SOILED rearranged without the O. After losing the E, LIDS fits {6 Covers} (see below for the filled in diagram).

I've included another "Laddergram" in this issue. Having read this column, I trust you will now enjoy solving it. The answer will be given in the Winter issue.

Next issue, provided I don't forget, I'll provide some techniques for solving those spaghetti looking puzzles otherwise known as mazes. Then, if you are interested (hint, feedback) I'll go into techniques for solving three dimensional mazes (really they are two dimensional but if you use a strong imagination they look 3-D).

Index

I am looking for a volunteer to put together an index of all the stories that have been published in past issues of "WATTS NEWS." Indeed there all ready exists an index by title but wouldn't it be nice to have an index that directs you to the stories written about a particular individual?

Ok, maybe that is a tall order for any one individual to expedite. How about three volunteers, one for each volume. The task wouldn't seem so ominous and the benefits to the rest of the family could be enjoyed sooner.

What this would entail is a list of the members name followed by all the page numbers this name appears.

My new address appears, as usual, at the forefront of this issue. Any correspondence, including more stories (big hint), should be directed to that address. Also, keep in mind that financial contributions keep this publication going.

Levi

I know he's coming back. He said he would. He always has but I always feel sad when he's gone out the door. He says it won't be forever but it seems like it already has. Ole man Manford asks where my daddy is and I proudly tell him he's far away working but I don't think that's quite right. Mommy has said what he's doing but I just can't remember.

Maybe Matt will be over and we can play Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or slug the baseball a time or two except he's always hitting me with the bat. That bat may be cushioned but it still hurts like heck. Dad says he's just trying to make tears come to my eyes and that he somehow manages to do it. 'Grin and bear it,' he says and 'maybe he'll tire of it'. How in the world can you grin about pain?

The neighbor kids have Nintendo, lucky them. Super Mario Brothers is my favorite. Uncle Tracy promised me he'd let me borrow his Nintendo for a couple of weeks but that's been months ago. Why didn't I get one for Christmas, I know I wasn't that bad last year. Maybe Santa Claus got mixed up when he was making his rounds. I'll just remind him next year that he must have forgot and I'm sure he won't forget again.

When daddy's here, he's always talking about having so much homework to do. It didn't use to be that way. Dad would go to work on the bus and come home on the bus, but he would always leave his work at work. Oh, mommy would have him do this and that around the house while he was here but now she pretty much does a lot of those things herself. Things just aren't the same without him.

Punching those keys on dad's calculator is almost as fun as playing Nintendo, almost. He's always pointing out a new key to me but I'm just a little kid and don't understand all that stuff. Oh, it's interesting all right but for now, the number keys is enough for me.

Mommy says my Lego's are kind of what daddy does. I put something nifty together and when I show it to them they ask me what I call it..... but how did they get all over the floor? I don't remember putting them there. I get so sick and tired of picking them up but mommy says she'll put them in up if I can't keep them picked up and I know she means it because she did put them up one time and I liked to never got them back. You wouldn't think a Lego could cause so much headache.

Mommy sometimes has a headache. When she does, she don't look so good. That's when I try to be extra quiet so's not to make her head hurt more than it already does. My head hurts me some times and I know it isn't any fun. You don't feel like doing much either.

Matt almost had that rabbit yesterday. Mommy says their fast but this one didn't look very fast to me. That rabbit would hop once this way, sit still for a little bit then hop that way. Must have thought he was fooling Matt but Matt almost had him cornered. If he would have caught him we could have called him Buggs. Matt says it wasn't a Jackrabbit. What's that suppose to mean? That there's more than one kind of rabbit?

Editors note: My son Levi & his cousin Matt liked the preceding story so much, I have decided to share it with the rest of you. Drawn on my childhood experience, it is written from Levi's point of view thus the title. I remember quite well, how my mind would wander & wonder.
