Monta Said

I understand Roy is begging for stories and news. I will try, but, I don't promise to be entertaining and I surely wish someone else would make an effort to write a few lines once in a while.

Perhaps Karen can slow down long enough, soon, to give us a run down on her summer. I understand it was go, go, go! She should have some interesting tidbits to share. And how about all the recent flooding in SE Texas? I understand Bruce got his boat stuck. And Dale & Frances got 28 inches of rain on their garden (in 3 days). I have heard from Virginia and Elmeda, both saying how much they enjoyed their visit at Virginia's in Idaho.

There is Sharon, going to RN school. The two boys, her schooling and working part- time is surely keeping her busy, but, we are all rooting for her and would like to hear how she is doing.

Louada keeps me posted, periodically. I really appreciate that. Heather is living in Austin now, and employed with her first real adult job since getting her degree last spring. She is an Area Associate for Apple Computer. It is a temporary position, but, wonderful experience and she is really hoping it will turn into a permanent position. Nancy and Randal went down recently, to take her furniture and help Heather get settled into her new apartment.

Stephanie was teaching her second year after graduation when her baby arrived ten weeks early. Little Holden Michael weighed in at 3 lb. 2 oz. on October 16, 1994. He has a lot of problems and was rushed to Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City. Pete quickly started calling him "Hold-on Michael". I think that sentiment is shared by all! Linda and Curt have spent a lot of time being there for Stephanie and Herb.

Pete is keeping his chin up, hoping his reflexes are quick enough that he can duck before someone knocks it off. Joann is doing very well. I really enjoyed visiting with Rita and Gene recently. I commend them on their parenting skills. Randy and Rhett are both working from can to can't and going to school the rest of the time. Randy commutes from Wheeler (or Briscoe) to Clinton, OK and is 'keeping his grades up'. I don't see or hear enough about him to tell you anything else. Rhett lives on campus in Canyon and is involved in so many extracurricular activities as well as trying to keep his GPA on an even keel. He works in Amarillo and comes by frequently. Amy is working really hard and seems to be doing very well. Luella was recently quite ill and in the hospital in Wheeler. I understand she is doing very well now.

Ed has good days and bad. He goes through the whole spectrum of things, ranging from total confusion with hallucinations and combativeness to being his usual easy to get along with "Mr Nice-Guy' self. During periods of confusion, he seems to be searching for missing pieces, and I have to stay right with him. On days when I am out of the house, he sometimes starts wandering and falls. He managed to break 3 more ribs. That slowed him down for a while, but a couple of nights ago, he started wandering at night, instead of sleeping and fell a couple of times during the night. He managed to find soft landing spots that night. This seems to be another part of Alzheimer's. It is never easy to deal with and every hour brings changes. There-- I have told everything I know about everybody.

I have my application in at the VA. They seemed favorably impressed with my application, but, currently have no openings in the lab.

Love,
Monta

Thanksgiving Gathering

Josh, Maegen and Jessie came all the way from Pottsboro, Texas with there mother and father, Rita & Gene Kimbrell to their grandpa & grandma Pete & Joann Watts' house Thanksgiving morning bright and early, 4:30 I am told. They said they called but I don't remember hearing the phone ring. I did hear them come in the door however but I was to sleepy to greet them.

Grandpa fixed biscuits and gravy for the bunch having placed a turkey in the oven the night before. We were all filled and managed to be hungry again by three that afternoon when a feast of everything you can imagine was set before us. Once again filled to busting, thoughts of going to the city park crept into the children's minds.

Seven in all: Robert, Angie & Dawn of Shelly's bunch, Josh, Maegen & Jessie of Rita and Gene's Bunch and Levi, my son, all piled into my poor little red car and off to the park we went. We all had a blast and as it was getting late, we piled back into my poor little red car, headed for home and took some pictures, 3-D pictures that is. It will be awhile before I can get them developed but I'll try to remember to bring them to the next reunion.

Roy

How to Pick Cotton!

I went to my Great Grandmother Sally's house when I was three or four and gathered eggs with someone. They were found in our car when we got ready to leave. A mix of unhatchables, glass eggs and glass doorknobs. I also picked cotton and when we got home, I told my dad I knew how to pick cotton.

First, you go to your great grand- mothers, then you get a large basket on the back porch. You follow your sister through the fence and when your pants get caught you call your sister and she gets you lose. Then you pick cotton. That's how you pick cotton.

Dad asked "What if you don't have a great grandmother?" I replied "I guess you don't pick cotton."

My Trip to Idaho

I left Oklahoma City on August 5 with my Grandpa & Grandma Elder and Aunt Jessie. We had lunch in Woodward, Oklahoma. Stayed in a motel in Kit Carson, CO.

August 6--We Drove to Denver, saw the Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls & Cheyenne Canyon. I walked 210 steps up the Eagles Nest then I walked down. Then I walked to the Crow's Nest and back. 410 stairs round trip. I was tired and slept well that night.

August 7--We spent the night in Craig, CO. We went to a primitive Baptist Church in Denver. I like the church. It looked small on the outside but big inside. Saw mountain goats.

August 8--Kenner, WY is the home of JC Pennys. I had a double cheeseburger the size of my head. I had a big appetite but I could only eat half of that.

August 10--We are at Aunt Virginia's now. I have been climbing trees, watching TV, catching fish in an irrigation ditch. I have been sleeping on an air mattress. Jessie is at Barbara's. I hope to see the water come in tomorrow. It comes in every 8 days. Aunt Virginia has a cat like Shorty's friend. Grandpa has been picking beans and strawberries. Aunt Virginia has a big Garden. She lives on the outskirts of town. A ranch is across the street. Aunt Virginia makes a good cherry cobbler. I, John, have been in Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and Idaho now.

August 12--We saw Yellowstone today. Saw Old Faithful. People held up traffic to take pictures of a moose. We spent the night in Cody, Wyoming.

August 13--We saw Buffalo Bill Museum here. I enjoyed the gun collection. Called home from Wichita, KS. Hope to make it home by midnight.

August 14--Made it home at 1 AM. I brought postcards, rock clock, blue rocks and a necklace for Rachel.

Sincerely,
John Elder

Christmas Greetings

For those who solved the laddergram in the last issue of "Watts News," you got the message in time. For those of you who did not get it solved in time and are anxiously waiting for the solution, here goes.

GRACE was the word I was looking for in 1) Mercy. Without the C, 2) Anger was RAGE. 3) Metric land measure was ARE (pronounced "air"). The C & G are placed in their respective columns. The following shows all the words & the message it reveals.

CGRACERAGEAREG
HHEARTSSTAREEASTR
RPEARLLEAPPALE
IMAINEAMENMANE
SSTRAPPARTRAPT
TLISTEDSLIDESLEDI
MLEMONNOELOLE'N
AGIANTSSTINGTINSG
SSEVERSVERSEEVERS

Publication

The book will have a few stories. Wills and a few land records maybe. Not the kind of things that appear in "Watts News" although these are very important. By all means, print the eggs story and the Cotton Picking too if I sent it (see "How to Pick Cotton" on page 58) and the fact that I am compiling the Watts family genealogy to include every Watts I can find plus their spouse and father- in-law and mother-in-law. Birth dates & places, marriage dates & places, death dates & places or the cities where the living reside. Also, religion, occupation & burial locations if possible.
