My Memories of Ed

He was called Sonny Boy until he was grown, I think. He reluctantly agreed to be called Edwin when he started to school.

He an I were born in Somerton, Arizona, where our parents moved just before I was born. Our Dad already had sisters in that area - new irrigation ditches were being dug and orange groves were being set out.

My first memories of Ed was when he was just beginning to walk. We were not supposed to play on one side of the house because of an irrigation ditch being nearby - whether that was a few feet or a half mile, I don’t know. I do remember grabbing his dress tail and sitting down screaming for Mama while he kept tugging trying to get away from me.

Later memories were when we were west of Wheeler after Virginia was born. Ed would bite when he got angry at any of us kids. I can remember having my hands on his forehead pushing him back while he was trying to bite me. He had several spankings but that didn’t slow him. One evening about sundown, he bit Dick (who was called Junior until he was grown). This particular evening, coyotes had begun to howl. Daddy took Ed by the hand and led him away from the house. After a little ways, Ed asked Daddy what he was going to do. Daddy informed Ed since they couldn’t get him to quit biting, he was going to feed him to the coyotes. Ed vowed he would never bite again so they returned to the house.

The year we started to school, a child was to be seven years old by September 1st. My birthday being late in September, I was almost 8 years old before I started. The rules changed that year and a child could go to school if he was 6 by the first of September. Eds birthday was August 5th so he and I started to school the same time.

There was one row of "High First," the rest of the room "Low First." I would get Eds paper and do his work. The teacher didn’t approve of that. I told her he didn’t know how but that didn’t help. She moved him further away from me. She passed out papers to the "Low First." He picked his paper up walked around and slapped it down on my desk. She met him there, picked up the paper with one hand, his shoulder with the other and marched him back to his seat.

I thought Mama would take my side in that little matter but I thought I had landed in a hornet’s nest and worst of all, Grandma Hart backed her up.

Love,
Elmeda Elder

News from Idaho

Thanks to all for the loving care given to our brother, Ed. I’m sure the quality of care he received extended his life several years. To Monta - special thanks. I know it was a long, hard journey even though you had lots of support. I don’t know how you did it.

I was so glad to be able to be there for Ed’s funeral. It was so good to see all of you.

Good news from our house. T.J. just successfully underwent cataract surgery on both eyes. His vision has greatly improved and will be even better when his eyes heal and is fitted with glasses.

I enrolled in the Master Gardener program through the County Agent’s office. It is a 3 hour weekly session with lectures and demonstrations - a 3 month course. It has been very informative and enjoyable even though a lot of study is required for the tests. Included in the course will be 30 hours of "hands on" experience - working in the office, attending seminars, teaching and some civic projects such as parks and the greenbelt, and hopefully, around the Senior Citizen’s complexes.

Other members of our family are fine. Barbara and Dennis are constantly up-grading their house. The latest project is installing Pergo, (a fairly new type of floor covering) in their kitchen. It’s beautiful.

Shannon is looking forward to graduation. In addition to his regular job Kenneth is helping his father during the calving season and preparing some animals for a production sale.

Roger is doing well and is finishing up laying tile on his kitchen and family room floors. He has some vacation this month and will be home for a few days. We’ll celebrate his birthday and Shannon’s birthday while he is here even though his birthday was February 6. Shannon will be 24 on March 23.

I do hope to go to the Cousins Reunion in Childress on May 4th.

Louada’s Clan

Louada still says that she is retired from vegetable gardening, even though some friends think she will change her mind with warmer weather approaching. She plans to use her energy for flower gardening, filling her freezer from someone else’s work, and hoping for a good fruit and pecan crop. She recently put more zinc around the pecan trees, so maybe that will help.

She stays busy keeping up with 7 piano students (9 lessons a week). She also has to teach herself in order to stay ahead of them.

Doxie and Brownie continue to protect her and keep her company. If you don’t know, Doxie is Gretchen’s mother, and we all know who Gretchen is! Doxie has gotten to the point that she would rather stay in her chair and halfway bark while Brownie can’t wait to go outside to bark and chase the trash truck.

Bible study, prayer and church activities are a big part of her life. She believes she will have more time for them without the garden.

Sharon continues to make renovations to her house. She’s just about finished with the laundry/sewing room. She repainted cabinets, laid tile, and made new curtains. She’s looking forward to having a special place for sewing and crafting. There is life after nursing school! She also has new carpet throughout the house.

Recently, she and three other nurses from ICU/CCU attended a two-day workshop on learning how to interpret 12-lead EKG, cardiac rhythms, arterial blood gas interpretations, endocrine disorders and neurological assessment. Now she will provide in-service training to the ICU staff on the 12-lead EKG.

Jeremy is 12 1/2 and lives with his mom in Altus. Jason is 15 and lives with his dad. Sharon and Jeremy (and the rest of us) hope and pray for Jason to want to come home.

Cecil and I drove to Phoenix for him to attend golf instructor school March 16-23. I went for support and encouragement for Cecil, plus a little R&R for myself. Afterward, we returned to our current jobs while we get the house ready to sell, send out resumes and hopefully get jobs in the Greenville, South Carolina area, where we want to relocate. Yes, that’s kind of far away and we’ll miss everyone, but we believe this is what we need to do. Keep us in your prayers as we prepare for all these big changes.

The Adventure

This summer promises to be one I’ll remember forever. Elmeda and I are planning a vacation, deluxe. We are planning to leave Amarillo June 21st en route to Blackfoot, Idaho. The route will take us generally through Denver, the Badlands of South Dakota (and Mt. Rushmore), the Big Horns of northern Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons and then to Blackfoot.

On the way home, we will venture south through Salt Lake City, Zion National Park, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, then back through Four Corners, Pagosa Springs, Colorado, embark upon a scenic train ride, then to Santa Fe and Las Vegas, New Mexico and meander back home in time for me to go to work July 7.

Elmeda is gathering information and doing the planning. It is exciting. I’m worse than a little kid waiting for Christmas. I told Elmeda I wanted to take that mule ride down into Grand Canyon and she said she would wait for me at the top (probably with a pair of binoculars!). I wonder how many days it would be before I could sit, stand or walk comfortably? In order to bypass embarrassment, I’ll leave the mule ride to others.

We would have gone farther but we ran out of time, so the other sights will have to wait until another trip. I’m not sure whether Elmeda is planning the second trip now, or gone on to the third! It has been such fun talking about it. God provided some awesome scenic splendor for our viewing pleasure plus there’s much historical significance, provided by mankind in the areas we will travel through.

If at all possible, some of the others will be traveling along with us either going up or coming back. The more, the merrier! And now, I will sign off with one of my very own phrases.

"No architect, however talented they may be, can compete with Mother Nature, through the grace of God."
