Watts Meet at Mobeetie Jail

I counted thirty-five but I may have missed some late arrivals. If you were there and your name doesn't appear in this article, please let me know.

The feast that was brought in was enough to feed an Army, even after everyone present had their fill of ham, chicken and barbecue beef. Corn on the cob, cole slaw and potato salad were among the many vegetables. And the desserts! If you weren't there, you missed out on mouth watering pecan pie, cheese cake and I can't remember what all. Volleyball and horse shoes were set up for those with enough energy for it and most everyone visited the jail and museum. People started talking about the bathtub and those curious went to see for themselves getting the shock of their lives upon observing a friendly bald headed man taking a bath. Poor Carol nearly jumped out of her skin and I was thinking what in the world. The man in the tub looked real at first glance.

The museum had artifacts of what was once state of the art wood stove, a juicer, a rope bed with feathered mattress, an encased wedding dress on a model, pictures of people none of us knew and a mural of the Calvary crossing a creek on horseback. My eye was caught by all the maps of the vicinity. I found it interesting that rail roads have been built, tore out and rerouted.

Here are the folk that were present at this years reunion.

Amazingly, this June day was cool and there was plenty of drink and ice left over. TJ had tale after tale to tell of his great grandson TJ. One photograph their brag book depicted Great Grandpa TJ feeding little TJ as a Cow would nurse her calf. And Nancy had pictures of Rhett's graduation and Heather's wedding. She's had a busy year. Linda took over on the assistant editor for their segment of the family. By the way, the idea behind having assistant editors is for every individual to have an avenue for their writings so utilize your assistant editors. Bill informed me of the Mahan Reunion which will be held on the weekend of the 4th. This will take place at

Family Web Site

Have you visited our very own web site yet? Almost all of the Newsletters have been formated and placed on the pan-tex.net server. The URL to the Main index, which has links to these Newsletter sites, is:

http://www.pan-tex.net/usr/p/puzzles/wattsnews/

Yes, it is a long URL so you won't want to reenter it more than once, right? Good news! After you enter it, and the site comes up, BOOKMARK it so all you have to do to get back to it is click on that handy BOOKMARK!

The indexes that have appeared in past issues of the newsletter enhanced the navigability of its contents. I will no longer be sending these indexes to you in the mail, however, the same information can be found in one of the three indexes now available. The Main Index provides links to each of the Newsletters. The Title Index provides links to the articles within each Newsletter. The Name Index, although shown, needs updating from the last time it was published nearly two years ago. Any volunteers? I am debating whether or not to attempt providing links from the page numbers to the articles they refer to.

Inside each issue I am providing links to the articles within that issue and links to the previous and next issue's. Also included are links to each of the indexes. I am open to other suggestions.

Describe the features of the web site such as the previous and next issue links.

Chess

Up to this point I haven't mentioned nor have I heard anyone else mention anything along the lines of Chess. Just how many players do we have out there? Dad plays as do my brothers Terry and Steve. I enjoyed the games Terry and I played while I was there on the multiple game set he gave me for Christmas. If you play or know of some member of the family that plays, I would like to know about it.

We could give each other pointers, new ideas on strategies or relate how you won that home town tournament. We could even set up a tournament of our own to see who rates among the Watts clan!

Chess, I think, is an invaluable tool for developing the mind to work out stratigies, especially when under attack. When I read back through history, most of the better leaders of military personel turned out to have been good Chess players. Now I am not saying that a good Chess player should run off and join the military.

I find Chess relaxing. It also reminds me of the new career I have taken up for myself. Engineers take a problem and try to devise a solution or come up with various strategies to overcome those problems.

The game, nonetheless, fascinates me and I am hoping there is someone else in this family that it fascinates as well. Who was it that I had the opportunity to play against at our first reunion? Was that you Roger? I am getting a little better at recognizing names and faces but the first reunion was eight years ago and my memory of it is beginning to fade.

Since the World Wide Web has come onto the scene, numerous sites pertaining to Chess has cropped up. I have a link on my resume to a site that can be visited for a week. At that site there are thousands of Chess players all over the world that gather for games and tournaments. This site has automatic scoring and as it costs to be a part of it, the rules are followed fairly closely. Other sites that I have visited in the past that were free of charge were subject to rude individuals that would repeat some statement of dissatisfaction.

Keep those stories coming and please do let me know of any family members that are Chess players.

The Desert

It's Dry here, which goes without saying. Blast furnace dry heat in summer that scorches every drop of water in its path. The only relief is the monsoon which sweeps through, sometimes with torrents of rain, a lot of times not (deserts don't get much rain) and afterwards, hot, humid, sauna steam bath, the air is so thick it is hard to breathe. But people like it here. Sunshine year round. Mild winters, nice weather (not that I call blistering heat nice).

I drink a lot of water, used to be a gallon and a half a day but I would still be too dehydrated so I've been trying for two gallons. Some times I forget so I'm going around in a daze until suddenly or gradually I realize I'm thirsty.

Ah, the desert! Lizards everywhere seeking water as are birds, snakes, insects, people. People of course resort to swimming pools, suntanning in the process, others just stay under the air conditioner all day until nightfall. Of course even then it can be well over 100 degrees so they go back to the A/C.

I've spent 11 summers here in Tucson, starting on the twelfth and wondering whatever possessed me to come here in the first place. After all, Colorado has hot summers too (usually under a 100 degrees) and it only gets down below zero in the winter (I've seen it at -30 before) and snow can be quite beautiful (until you have to work in it). The ice can be fun to slide on, unless you happen to be driving, hit the brakes and find out you have none.

So I keep asking myself, is it really worth it? I may never know.

Did You Know?

If you are without an e-mail address (or a computer for that matter) these are available at most public libraries. The internet has been made available just as books were made available to the general public many years ago. Now your local librarian will be happy to help you out getting connected but you will need to go to one of the web based mail servers such as hotmail.com or rocketmail.com. For those interested, I will be including a link to these sites on another index titled (let's see) MAIL SERVERS. I would be very much interested in hearing from those of you that acquire e-mail addresses. It is speedy (once you find a computer at the library that is available) and cheaper (actually, it's free) than a phone call.
