A cement block building on the corner of Reid Street and Martha Drive was rented on June 1, 1955 by the Brotherhood of First Baptist Church, Anderson, for a Sunday School mission.
June 26, 1955: An organizational meeting was held with eight people from the community and fifteen people from First Baptist. Mr. J.N. Watson, Mission Director for Saluda at that time was present. The Brotherhood of First Baptist offered to continue paying the rent of $5.00 per week without incurring financial responsibility on the mission.
July 3, 1955: 25 people were present at the Mission Sunday School. Mr. J.N. Watson spoke at the Morning Worship Service. The total Sunday School offering was $9.83.
November 27, 1955: Sunday School had 24 adults, 29 juniors and 10 nursery people with a total of 63 attending and receiving an offering of $54.67.
Three lots were purchased by First Baptist for a building program in the future.
January 22, 1956: The Powell house was purchased.
February 15, 1956: The Powell house was used for services of the Martha Drive Mission.
1956: The church building was begun. The same year, this building was completed with a seating capacity of 175.
1957: A four-room brick house was purchased for more classroom space.
1958: Carpet, pulpit furniture and new pews were added to the church building making a seating capacity of 250 at a cost of $4100.
July 31, 1960: At 3:30 P.M., Martha Drive Baptist Chapel was constituted into a full-fledged Southern Baptist Church.
October 1960: A cement block building was erected for recreation and fellowship.
October 22, 1961: The church voted to purchase 2 1/2 acres of land in front of the church to be used for parking and recreation. It was also voted upon to erect an educational building to house a Nursery, Beginner, Primary and Junior Departments at a cost of $58,000. This building was occupied February of 1962.
1963: An organ was purchased at a cost of $2,700.
June 1964: The church voted to buy a pastorium at a cost of $15,500.
1965: A bond program was entered into to pay off all indebtness, renovate the the church building, add air-conditioning and purchase a new piano at a cost of around $18,000.
1974-1975: Talk of moving the church begun. Land on Highway 29 was looked at and two churches which were for sale at that time were also considered.
June 1, 1977: A down payment was made for land on Dobbins Bridge Road, where the present church now stands.
April 30,1978: The name, Pleasant View was chosen from names submitted by the Members of Martha Drive.
October 15, 1978: Plans for the new building were presented with a projected cost of $300,000. These plans were not possible.
1980: Revised plans were submitted at a cost of $200,000.
July 5, 1981: The first service was held at Pleasant View Baptist Church at 2511 Dobbins Bridge Road.
1988: A new sanctuary was built.
March 31, 1988: First services were conducted with dedication following two weeks later.
December 20,1989: More Sunday School rooms were needed, a mobile unit was purchased at a cost of $4,895. New carpet was added to the buildings.
August 15, 1994: Pleasant View once again stepped out on faith as for the first time a full-time staff member, other than the Pastor, was added. God has richly blessed this effort of His local church to expand the Kingdom of God.
God has truly blessed us at Martha Drive/Pleasant view. Lives have been changed; souls have been reclaimed for the Lord. We have had Godly men as our pastors who believed the Bible and taught us God's Word. As we look at our history, let it only be a fleeting glance backward. let's turn our eyes to the future.
In the fall of 1999, a futuring group was elected to help the church seek God's direction for the new millenium.
In February of 2001, G*R*O*W* (God Rewards Our Work) was initiated by our church. GROW Teams meet 1 Monday a month for an hour and a half and minister to others by visitation, phone calls and letters. We believe this to be God's calling to our church as we try and faithfully obey the Great Commission commanded by Christ for His Church to do: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I (Jesus) commanded you (His Church)".
