(Continued)

I continued the research line and other aspects of transplant immunology research under the support of Roche Organ Transplantation Research Foundation as a key co-researcher since last year. The fund is $65,000 per year for 3 years [Ref ]. The researches on the role of CD28 and CTLA4 co-stimulatory molecules and the role of NF-kB signaling in allograft rejection and the introduction of tolerance, mostly using murine abdominal and cervical heart transplantation and skin transplantation models, have produced at least 2 papers and 2 presentations.

As key co-researcher, I also involved in the research of transplant immunology in islets transplantation models, funded by State of Illinois in this year [Ref ]. The fund is $100,000 for one year. This research is in proceeding and has yield promising initial results. It is expected to be productive in fabulous findings.

This has been the most productive period in my life.  I have published eleven primary papers, and given six oral presentations based on the research I undertook at the University of Chicago.

7. Main Achievements

In this section, I will only include the main awards, papers, books and presentations.  Please note a different rule between China and America in authorship for awards and publications.  In China, the most important author is the first author.  Promotion in title and position and salary raise are granted to the first author. The importance will be reduced gradually in turn to the 2nd author, the 3rd author, and so on.  I contributed to many papers and awards in which I was not the first author but thought it was not important to list them in my resume when I was in China. As a result, I only recorded and listed awards and publications in which I am the first author.  But in America, the rule is somewhat different and I have begun listing all the papers I have contributed to.

· Young Investigator Award

In May 1999, I won this prestigious award conferred by ASTS (American Society of Transplant Surgeons) in the Combined Annual Scientific Meeting of AST (American Society of Transplantation) and ASTS.  Every year, thousands of scientific papers from all over the world are submitted to this world top academic meeting for transplantation science.  Only about one third of these papers are selected to be presented at this meeting.  And only the top fifteen papers first-authored by young researchers can be elected to get this world-renowned award. The authors and the title of the research are as follows:

Ping Zhou, Gregory L. Szot, Arlene H. Sharpe, Gang He, Oliver Kim, Kenneth A. Newell, Jeffery A. Bluestone, and J. Richard Thistlethwaite. "Murine allogeneic heart graft rejection is dependent on indirect B7 mediated costimulation".

All other awards were conferred by academic Chinese societies or committees in China. I am the first author in all of the following awards recorded below.

· 12/1998, "Research on orthotopic abdominal visceral cluster transplantation and its related surgical techniques", the 2nd Prize of Advanced Science and Technology Award, Hubei Province, China. This is a state level award.

· 10/1995, "Orthotopic abdominal cluster transplantation for the treatment of upper abdominal malignancies", the 2nd Prize of National Outstanding Academic Paper by Middle-aged and Young Investigators granted by Chinese Association of Transplantation. This is a national level award.

· 10/1993, "Improved techniques for fetal cadaver multiple organ harvesting", the 3rd Prize of 5th Annual Natural Scientific Outstanding Academic Paper Award of Hubei Province, China. This is a state level award.

· 10/1993, "Pathological studies of abdominal organ cluster grafts", the 2nd Prize of 5th Annual Natural Scientific Outstanding Academic Paper Award of Hubei Province, China. This is a state level award.

· 10/1993, "SPECT evaluation on CsA caused nephrotoxicity in kidney transplant recipients", the 1st Prize of Outstanding Academic Paper, Association of Medical Specialists of South-Middle China. This is a semi-national level awards.

· 07/1992, "Research on allogeneic heterotopic abdominal multiple organ transplantation in dogs", the 1st Prize of 4th Annual Natural Scientific Outstanding Academic Paper Award of Hubei Province, China. This is a state level award.

· 12/1989, "Experimental and clinical research on fetal kidney transplantation", Outstanding Thesis Award, Chinese Medical Association, Wuhan Branch, China. This is a city level award.

Book chapters (In Chinese publication):

I wrote chapters in three important professional textbooks or professional books. I am the first or the single author for all those chapters:

1. I wrote the chapter "The Source of Organ Donors" and "Social Issues and Influences of Organ Transplantation" in «Medical Sociology».  The Principle Editor of the book is Professor Hao-Li Zhou. This is the first edition published in 1992.  The book was then used as textbook of medical ethics for medical students in some universities in China.

2. I was in charge of in two chapters, "SPECT Evaluation in Organ Transplantation" and "Multiple Organ Transplantation (I am the 2nd author in this chapter)" in «Transplatology».  It was the 1st edition and published in 1994.  The Main Editor is the Chinese transplant pioneer, Professor Sui-Sheng Xia.  This was the first and also the only transplantation professional book in China at the time.  Compared with the book below published five years later, this book emphasizes basic scientific knowledge and the whole transplantation profile. It was the first academic scientific book available to the transplant community in China.

3. Single authored in three chapters, "Organ Donors and Donation", "Organ Preservation and Preservation Solutions" and "Combined Multiple Organ Transplantation" in the book entitled «Clinical Transplantation».  It was the 1st edition and published in 1999.  Main Editor Sui-Sheng Xia.  Compared with book above published three years before, besides describing more modern developments in transplantation, this book mainly emphasized more practical aspects of transplantation.  It is the first and also the only complete professional book for transplant practice until now in China.

Peer-reviewed conference presentations when in America

All these presentations were given orally.  In academic scientific meetings, top papers are selected for oral presentation, as time is usually too limited to present all papers orally. The remaining papers are presented as posters.  My presentations have always been received enthusiastically are have led to many questions and discussion.

Citation of my publications

Most of my papers are about hottest researches in transplantation and transplant immunology. For the papers I published in China, I have no means to check the citation of my papers right now. For the papers published in America, some are too new to be recorded by some information institute. Some of my papers can be checked out. It is an honor that two of my papers were cited three times by the articles published in one of the most prestigious medical journal, Nature Medicine. Here below are the reports on the cited-by information for some of my papers published in America, recorded in ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) Web of Science (http://webofscience.com/CIW.cgi):
