Q2

"Q2" was a thoroughly amusing and refreshing hour of Voyager. Seeing Q again was laugh-inducing and enjoyable as always, and seeing his real-life son play Q2 was truly a special treat. Kudos to Keegan for very realistically playing Q's son! It was a tough job to do and he did it quite well.

Q2's alternating rebelliousness and attempts at making his father proud are things that most teens will relate to. Janeway, although she is only, as Q commented, "a mommy to her crew," parented Q2 quite well. At some points it even seemed as if Q2 was closer to Aunt Kathy than to his dad Q. Then, of course, if you observe Q and son interacting and you realize, nah, those two are not only father and son, but close friends as well.

Part of a teenager's suffering stems from the stress of making and keeping friends. It was fortunate for Q2 that he found a friend in Icheb, and perhaps even in Tom Paris. The scene in the asteroid field with Tom teaching Q2 and Icheb how to fly a shuttle was funny, perhaps a bit trite, but I liked it nevertheless. It resembled a guys night out scene, them having fun and doing dangerous things. "Now that I'm mortal I'd appreciate you not crashing us into a rock!" (or something like that) --Q2

While Q2 may have succeeded in many of his endeavors as a mortal, he wanted most of all to be like his dad. This I found very poignant. Q2's sincerity in his plea to Captain Janeway was stirring as well - "Thanks, Aunt Kathy, but I don't want to be human. I want to be a Q--like my father."

To regain his powers, Q2 had to exemplify Q-ness by proving himself to Q through his deeds. This meant, of course, that he had to behave. Yet seemingly unbelievable were Q2's swift transitions between bad-boy/jerk/troublemaker to good-boy/nice guy/follows-the-rules kid. However, we must remember that we are dealing with a teenager, and we all know how capricious and moody mortal teenagers can be. Magnify that with a dash of omnipotence and a pinch of immortality, and you've got Q2's situation.

Because I could relate so much to Q2 and his hardships, I especially liked this episode. And Keegan's charisma and good looks may have also helped make this episode so good. Just a little ; )

I give this episode 5 out of 5 stars.

Enjoy!
