Seeing Green

Ally contemplates taking anti-depressants; Billy joins a male chauvinist therapy group; John and Nelle, who are not speaking, defend a high school boy charged with harassment.

Ally discusses her recurring Al Green fantasies with her temporary therapist (Special Guest Betty White), who immediately wants to put Ally on anti-depressants. She tells Ally that happiness doesn’t come from God or from being in love, it comes in a pill, so why not take advantage?

At the office, Nelle is still mad at John for his spontaneous spanking but the two are co-chairing a case involving the suspension of an awkward high school student. He was inspired by a romance novel to declare his love for a popular classmate by kissing her. Now, she’s charging him with sexual assault. Billy, meanwhile, starts attending a male chauvinist support group in response to Renee’s scathing accusation that he’s a chauvinist.

Back in therapy, Ally thinks she’s got herself figured out. She believes she is making safe sexual choices. Both the car wash guy and Ling were one-time outbursts that offered no risk of falling in love and therefore, no threat of sorrow. Perhaps Al Green is the same thing - a safe love interest for her. And besides, she explains, the fantasies give her emotional and physical nourishment. Nonplussed, the therapist prescribes Prozac...but Ally is totally conflicted about taking it.

A meeting regarding the assault case reveals that the victim is more upset about being humiliated in front of her peers than she is about the actual kiss. Nelle and John meet alone with the girl and point out that her humiliation will soon be forgotten, whereas their client’s will last a lifetime. John’s personal anecdote resonates with Nelle, who realizes she may have overreacted to his brief moment of sadism, and also with the girl who drops all charges. Soon after, Nelle visits her client at school. She kisses him, with everyone watching, instantly elevating his social status and self-esteem.

When Billy brings Richard to a therapy session it totally backfires. Richard gives an impassioned speech celebrating chauvinism. Why should men apologize for their natural instincts? Richard instructs the group to reclaim their penises -- and Billy is particularly inspired. After Billy confesses his newfound inner chauvinist to Georgia, they run into each other in the unisex. She’s appalled at his unapologetic new attitude especially the parts about how she should be a stay-at-home mom, never gain weight, and learn to worship her husband. She punctuates her feelings with a few kick-boxing moves and sends Billy flying.

Alone in the office, Ally faces her first Prozac pill. After much deliberation, she decides to flush the pills rather than kill her inner Al Green. Later she heads home, dancing to the beat of her own music.
