Why Sophia?

Sophia was the Greek goddess of wisdom, and the word philosophy means love of wisdom. So, because my religious beliefs are based on philosophical musings and an open-minded study of the world's religions, I feel that Sophia is the most appropriate name to give to my image of the unimaginable, absolute, eternal One.

Another reason I chose Sophia as my goddess is precisely that she is a goddess and not a god. I feel that humanity -- especially in the west -- has suffered long enough under the influence of the moldy old corpses of established, authoritarian,"revealed religion" and the paternalistic death cult societies that they have engendered. The Judeo/Christian/Islamic tradition has predominated in the west now for two thousand years and what have we had but incessant slavery and warfare. I feel a move towards goddess worship and more feminine values could only be good.

In America the "founding fathers" (Whoops! Talk about paternalism) bestowed upon us the blessing of liberty -- quite appropriately another goddess -- and its requisite separation of church and state. Why should we willingly allow our minds to be controlled the dogma of the revealed religions which our great benefactors so detested?

The answer is simply that we should not!  We should instead use the gifts of reason and love which divine providence has bestowed upon us and work together to create a society based on that reason and love. I have created this website as a small contribution towards that goal.

Love to all of you, my brothers and sisters.
