CALCANEODYNIA
(Massage Therapy)



GENERAL EXPLANATION:

Calcaneodynia is a condition of topical pain in the heel. It often occurs at the age of 40 to 60 and is related to chronic bruise and strain, degenerative calcification of tendons and bones, bony spurs due to heel, hyperosteogeny, chronic inflammation of synovial bursa in the heel, and other factors. The main clinical manifestation is heel pain which is aggravated by standing or walking and while coming off the bed in the morning and is relieved with exercises, by aggravated again by extended periods of walking and standing and is decreased again after rest. Topical tenderness is obvious is the case of a bony spur in the heel, like a pricking pain. Massage therapy functions to soothe the tendon, dredge the collateral’s, activate the blood, and stop pain.

NOTES:

1. It is advisable to soak the foot in hot water (with vinegar for a bony spur) for 20 minutes before massage treatment in order to enhance the effect.
2. It is advisable to wear soft-sole shoes with the insole (hollow in the center) for heel pain and walk and stand less.

TREATMENT:

1. Press and knead the heel with the palm for 2 to 3 minutes and shake the ankle 15 to 20 times.

2. Dig and press Pushen, Kunlun(BL-60), Taixi(K-1) and Zhaohai(K-6) heavily for one minute each. It is advisable to dig and press Pushen with heavy force to relieve pain if there is heel pain while walking.

3. Press and knead Sanyinjiao(SP-6), Xuanzhong(GB-39), Rangu and Jingmen for 30 to 60 seconds each. Press Zugentongdian on the palmar side of the wrist for 1 minute.

4. Punch the heel’s painful spot (or use a hammer) for 5 minutes or step on a round log, rolling it forwards and backwards for exercise.
