DYSMENORRHEA
(Massage Therapy)





GENERAL EXPLANATION:

Dysmenorrhea is a disease of cyclic pain that occurs in the lower abdomen and lumbosacral region during, before or after menstruation, thus influencing daily life. Primary dysmenorrhea is often related to emotional, constitutional, and physiological facts that can cause spasm in the uterus and abdominal pain. Secondary dysmenorrhea is mostly caused by inflammation, endometriosis, and tumors which can result in congestion in the uterus. The clinical manifestations are lower abdominal pain radiating to the waist during, before or after menstruation, pallor, cold perspiration, and cold limbs. In severe cases, it is also accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Massage therapy can regulate and harmonize Qi and blood, regulate menstruation, and stop pain.

NOTES:

1. It is advisable to give massage treatment before menstruation once or twice a day, grasping Hegu(LI-4) and pressing Sanyinjiao(SP-6) before the application of other techniques.
2. It is necessary to pay attention to menstrual hygiene and avoid catching cold and eating uncooked, cold, and spicy food.
3. It is advisable to see other therapies in addition for secondary dysmenorrhea.

TREATMENT:

1. Rub the abdomen clockwise and counterclockwise for 5 to 10 minutes respectively.

2. Push and knead the abdomen along the line of the umbilicus, Qihai(RN-6) and Guanyuan(RN-4) to and fro slowly for 3 to 5 minutes.

3. Pinch and lift the painful area in the abdomen upwards for 10 times. Vibrate the lower abdomen with the palm for 5 times.

4. Press and knead Ganshu(BL-18) and Shenshu(BL-23) on the back for 30 times respectively. Chafe Mingmen(DU-4) and lumbosacral region till the warm sensation appears.

5. Grasp Hegu(LI-4), press Sanyinjiao(SP-6) and knead Xuehai(SP-10) for 30 times respectively.
